If the University of
West Georgia’s campus
has looked more like a
construction site for the
past few weeks, there is a
plausible explanation.
The UWG campus is
expanding to accommodate
the increasing number of
students entering its doors.
With a record
breaking intake topping
10,6(X) undergraduate and
graduate students for fall
semester, it is obvious

facelift.
Carrollton’s first
Mexican restaurant. The
Lazy Donkey, will reopen
under new management
and with anew appearance,
possibly by November,
according to owner Jesse
Onate.
A native of Mexico
who has been in the
restaurant business for
33 years, Onate owns
Monterrey Mexican
restaurants in Douglasville,
Chamblee, Smyrna, and
Riverdale. He has been
credited with opening the
first Mexican restaurant
in Atlanta, the Monterrey
in Chamblee back in
1974. He also owns the
El Ranchero Mexican
restaurant in Newnan.
The Lazy Donkey’s
original owner, Orlando
Rivera, operated the
Bankhead Highway
restaurant for nearly 25

that more people will be
attending UWG in the
upcoming years. But
what exactly awaits these
students as they spend their
college years at UWG?
How about a newly
renovated Geosciences
building, an enormous
9,(XX)-seat stadium, anew
Health & Wellness Center,
and a remodeled parking
lot?
The first of these
additions is the Callaway
building. The estimated
time it will take for the
new Callaway building
to be completed is 16
years. It began as a small
gas station with a drive
in window, which Rivera
turned into a small bar. The
area was a small strip mall,
with an Exxon gas station,
neighbored by a fish bait
and beer store and a Tasty
Freeze ice cream parlor.
Rivera later converted the
fish bait and beer shop and
the ice cream shop next
door into the dining area
of the restaurant.
The restaurant became
an icon of Carrollton
dining.
“When we started
working on the front
outside, it had aluminum
shingles on there, four
by-four squares,” said
William Gray, the
contractor working on the
reinvention of the Lazy
Donkey. “I remember
years ago the Tasty Freeze
had tile like these on the
outside, and there was still
some of that on the outside
walls.”
“We’ve had people
from the college come by
and see what’s going on,
saying they used to go to
college here years ago and

months. The purpose
behind this construction is
to house both geography
and geology programs that
are active on campus.
“We are very excited
about the addition to
the Callaway building
because it shall bring the

Professor Julie Bartley
of the geosciences
department. “Currently
geography and geology
courses are located in two

Gray said.
In 2005, Rivera sold
the restaurant to one of his
employees, Gail Cuellar,
who later closed it.

rooms that will be much
more comfortable for
the students. We are also
excited about working in

the community with water

Bartley also said
there will be a spacious
lobby somewhat similar to
the TLC, but w ith a glass

The ground-breaking
ceremony for this building
is scheduled for Sept. 29,
2007. This construction
will result in the loss of
about eight parking spaces
in the where the current
building is located.
Speaking of parking,
with the student increase

about the reduction of
parking spaces on campus.
