For many students
at the University of West

college that once counted
former Speaker of the

of pride. Newt Gingrich

The West Georgian
had a chance to sit down
and have a chat with
Dr. Sethna, president of
the University of West
Georgia, and ask hint a
few questions. Recently
serving as Chancellor of
the University System
of Georgia, his resume
stretches to almost 13
pages, and he comes
across as an extremely
motivated and intelligent
individual. But one of the
most important things to
know about Dr. Sethna is
that he is qualified to speak
for himself. Here is Dr.
Sethna in his own words.
Q: When you were a
student, what challenges
do you remember facing
and overcoming?
A: It was a tough time. I
went in as an undergraduate
student in electrical
engineering; it was a very
rigorous and competitive
program. Most of the
other students were better
prepared to handle it than
I was, so I had to struggle.
It was a 5-year lock-step
program, and this is after
a 2-year arts and sciences
program, so it was a full
7-year program, and not
because I was goofing off
or anything, this was a
full program. The faculty

week, Gingrich will be
coming back to the UWG
campus for an event called
Solutions Day, for his
non-partisan organization,
American Solutions.
Newt Gingrich
became the Speaker of the
House of Representatives
following the 1994 mid
term elections, in which
Republicans gained 54
seats and took control of
the House for the first time
in forty years. The cause of
that shift is conventionally
was brilliant, it was a first
class university, but not
very helpful. So it actually
has helped me formulate
my own teaching style,
because, I do what they

didn’t, and I try to help
students.
Q: You mentioned the
fact that there are 100,000
students coming to the
University System of
Georgia. Currently we have
260,000 in the system, so
we’re looking at 360,000.
UGA is pretty much full,

believed to be the result of
Gingrich's “Contract with

various reforms proposed
by those Republicans

Following the
election, Gingrich was
the leading member of
congress and he became
Speaker of the House.
During his time as speaker,
he frequently stood off

shutdown of the federal
government in 1995.
Because of the need to
balance the federal budget,
cuts were necessary, and
President Clinton had
different priorities from
Republican leadership.
Gingrich led congressional
Republicans to not pass
the budget that they did

years from now, we want
to be in the mind of future
students who will say, “I
have a scholarship to go
anywhere, I want to go to
West Georgia.”
Q: What can students and
alumni expect as far as a
timeframe for the stadium,
and speaking of capital
projects, how are we going
to expand to help take
100,000 students, do we
have a plan to expand our

through Jan. 6, 1996, the
federal government ceased
non-essential functions.
Eventually both sides
reached a compromise,
and the budget was
passed, much closer to
the GOP proposal. While
the shutdown came as
a political blunder for
Gingrich, he achieved
most of his goals.
After years of battling

both in Congress and the
White House, Gingrich

Now to answer your
question about facilities
and land and so on. Yes,

acreage is 375 acres.
We expect to add a large
chunk, you can do a reverse
computation, it will end
up being 621 acres, so its
going from 375 to 621. and
we are getting this donation
of land from the city. The
terms of the deal have been
signed between the Mayor
and Acting President Tim
Hynes, but we have not got
active approval yet from
the Board of Regents.
The stadium is only a
matter of money. We want
to break ground as soon
as we have a reasonable
amount of money to go
forward. The potential
sources of money are
external, we already have
got a lot of good donors
to make substantial
contributions of pledges,
alumni giving, which we
can do a whole lot more on,
and conceivably, a student
partnership, which could
be a fee of some kind.
So we need to package a
whole deal to get where
we’re going. The total cost
is likely to be in the sl6
million range. So we’re
likely to piece together that
sl6 million package from
a combination of different
sources of revenue.
