Wolves volleyball team win first GSC championship

The West Georgia
volleyball team has made
history all season, going
on a 17-match winning
streak with an overall
24-11 regular season
record. They succeeded
under the leadership of
interim head coach Carla
Silveira, who took over
the team in the middle
of the season. However,
entering the Gulf South
Conference tournament
last weekend at Rhodes
Field House in Searcy,
Arkansas, many doubted
the Wolves chances to
win as a fourth seeded
team.
The Wolves made
history again by
becoming the first fourth
seeded team to win
in the opening round,
ultimately winning their
first GSC championship
in school history.
“It feels great to
be apart of history,”
Silveira said. “We had
a great team throughout
the season and one of
our goals was to win
the GSC Tournament.
I just told our team to
believe that we were
good enough to win and
we did.”
The volleyball team
previously won only
one game in postseason
appearances in the past

The West Georgia Wolves volleyball team can now add a GSC Tournament win to their already im
pressive 24-11 season. Coming off a historical 17-match winning streak, the Wolves made history
once again by entering the GSC tournament as fourth seed— and taking it all.

first GSC title since the
2002 Men’s Basketball
Championship.
West Georgia
began the tournament
by defeating host and
number one seeded
Harding. The first game
started off slow for both
teams, but the Lady
Bison got things together
and won a close game on
their home court 30-28.
In game two,
the Wolves jumped
to an 8-2 lead. After

Harding made a run, the
Wolves went to Carolin
Schoeneck, who got
seven kills in game two.
West Georgia finished
the game winning 30-27,
and never looked back
as they upset number
one seeded Harding 3-l
in the first round.
In the next round,
the Wolves faced the
three-time defending
GSC champions, North
Alabama. The Lady
Lions swept the regular
season meetings,
winning 3-0 in Florence
and 3-2 in Carrollton,

continued their historic
weekend, defeating the
Lions 3-0 to make it to
the championship game.
The real contest
came against West
Florida, a team that has
come back from a 2-0
deficit twice to beat the
Wolves in the regular
season, and they showed
no respect to the Wolves
at the beginning of the
match. However, West
Georgia got over the
hump, blasting the Lady
Argos by a 3-0 margin.

Veteran’s Day was
celebrated at the University
of West Georgia last
Friday. The Ingram Library
featured Jeff Rooks, a
lecturer and a veteran, who
spoke about the history of
Veteran’s Day at the Lunch
and Leant program. Also in
attendance was Dr. Walter
Todd, assistant professor
of physical education and
recreation, among other
responsibilities. Todd
presented an overview of
his private collection of war
memorabilia.
His exhibit included a
German propaganda book,
a WWI photo album, and
photographs of UWG
students in uniform.
Asa way of helping to
celebrate Veteran’s Day,The
West Georgian sat down
with another distinguished
veteran who was wounded
in Vietnam, a man who now
works in Financial Aid and
will be retiring in less than a
week, Billy Alford.

of 30-27. West Georgia
was uneasy being up two
games to none, as they
had been in this position
twice before, both times
resulting in a loss.
Refusing to allow
history to repeat itself,
the Wolves struck early
in the third game, going
ahead by a score of 15-
3. They quickly put
West Florida away and
won the game by a final
score of 30-19.

Amber Barnlund led
West Georgia with six
blocks throughout the
tournament. Sophomore
Andressa Martins led
the Wolves with 65 kills
on the weekend and
was named the Most
Outstanding Player in
the tournament. Carolin
Schoeneck was the only
other UWG player to
score double figures
and was named to the
All-Tournament Team
along with East Division
Freshman of the Year,
Jordan McDonald.
“Andressa and
Carolin really stepped
it up last weekend and
their performance was
excellent defensively
and offensively,”
Silveria said. “It really
showed, because they
both were honored on
the All-Conference
Team.”
After the win.
West Georgia gained
an automatic bid to the
NCAA South Central
Regional Tournament
in Kirksville, Mo.
They will take on Lady
Blue Washburn on
Thursday. Washburn
is ranked number six
in the country and is a
number one seed in the
South Central Region.
