JOSEPH Macon PCCW Adopts New Constitution MACON—A constitution, re commended by Msgr. Thomas I. Sheehan, pastor of Saint Jo seph’s Church, was approved by members of the Parish Coun cil at a meeting held here last Sunday afternoon. Under the new constitution, which has only to be amended to set up the schedule of regu lar meetings, Mrs. Joseph Jon- cas is president, Mrs. James I. Jones, vice-president, Mrs. Frank Jones, secretary, and Mrs. Agnes Simmons, Treas urer. Monsignor Sheehan stressed the point to the group—that the reorgination is an effort to coordinate the efforts of all lay-workers, whether they be longed to an organization or not, to “obtain maximum re sults in the development of Par ish activities”. Holy Trinity Sodality, for merly Holy Trinity Circle as it was known in the earliest days of St. Joseph’s Parish, .was abolished upon a resolution of its members, when it became known that consolidation of all parish organizations was de sired. The members then ap proved an additional recom mendation to work with the committee for Spiritual Devel opment under the new program, and also added that members of the abolished Sodality work on other committees as a matter of preference and ability. St. Theresa's Sodality has also disbanded in order to bet ter work with the Committee on Cooperating with Christian Doctrine. St. Anthony’s Sodality voted to remain intact. Following approval of the new constitution, Mrs. Joncas ap pointed chairmen for the var ious work groups including Mrs. Clyde Olson, Cooperating with Christian Charities; Mrs. Rob ert Hinson, Jr., cooperating with the Confraternity of Chris tian Doctrine; Mrs. Joseph Mc- Goldrick, Jr., Family and Par ent Education; Mrs. Leonard Campbell, Refugee and Foreign Relief; Mrs. Joseph Benedetto, Public Relations; Mrs. Anthony Pachence, Civil Defense. Other committee chairman named are Mrs. Dan Harris, International Relations; Mrs. Robert Hurley, Jr., Legislation; Mrs. Wm. O’Shaughnessy, Li braries and Literature; Mrs. J. Gregg Puster, Spiritual De velopment; Mrs. J. P. Woodhall, Organization and Development; and Mrs. Don Benton, St. Mary’s Home Guild. The meeting which was held in the Auditorium of St. Jo seph’ s School was well attend ed and enthusiastic support of the coordinated program. The next meeting is set for September 15, at which time the time and date for monthly meet ings will be discussed. St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee SAVANNAH—Daniel J. Catholic Agency Has Helped 14,000 Cuban Children CLEVELAND, (NC) — More than 14,000 unaccompanied Cu ban children have been assisted in their flight from communism by the Miami Catholic Welfare Bureau without any adverse af fects on the young refugees, Miami’s diocesan director of Catholic Charities said here. Msgr. Bryan O. Walsh, who inaugurated the program for the Cuban children with the approv al and assistance of the Feder al government in 1960, was the principal speaker here (May 23) at the annual banquet of the Child Welfare League of Am erica meeting in conjunction with the National Conference of Social Welfare. Despite Harold Wallace’s towering 3-run homer over the tall pines and into the left-field tulip beds, the sterling team play of the professors gained the victory. Contributing factors to their success were the ex cellent cooperation of the Sen iors umpiring, the splitting of the freshman into 3 equal squads, and the dubious wrist- watch of the rector, who called curfew with two freshman on base and a slugger at the plate. Every priest on the faculty was in top shape next day. u Look Up And Live” To Feature Story Of Exiles O. TEGERSON. Send future items to: Fr. Lawrence A. Lucree, P. O. Box 180, Savannah, Ga. Annual May Procession At Brunswick The annual May Procession of St. Francis Xavier Church was held on Sunday, May 19th. Due to the overflow of students in the school, the Procession was held in Hanover Circle across from the Church. The procession was led by Rev. Paul Burkort, S.M. Pas tor, accompanied by the acoly tes who held lighted tapers.” Amid a beautiful setting, a love ly May Altar was erected for the occasion. The children marched around the circle singing appropriate hymns and when they approach ed the altar Miss Brenda Wil liamson crowned the statue of the Blessed Virgin. Her atten dant was Miss Stephanie Knocz. and the little crown bearer was Pat Bryne. As the procession approach ed the altar, the eighth grade girls formed a court of honor and the boys formed a guard of honor. Each of the girls in the court, carried a red car nation and placed in a large letter “M” especially designed for the occasion. Father Burkort thanked the Sisters for their “tireless ef fort in training the children so beautifully,” and also paid tri bute to the parents who made an effort to have their children attend the Devotion. Benediction followed the short sermon and the Proces sion then proceeded through the circle and disbanded in the school yard. The flowers that the children carried in the pro cession were taken to the church and placed on the Blessed Vir gin’s altar. CHRIS R. LATEST LEGION LISTINGS CLASS A, SECTION I King Kong vs. Godzilla Nutty Professor, The 13 Frightened Girls CLASS A, SECTION II Call Me Bwana Erik the Conqueror Young Racers, The CLASS B In The Cool of The Day Lancelot and Guinevere %youth .Scop e REV. HERBERT J. WELLMEIER It has been said repeatedly by experts in youth work that if you give the young people direction, trust and a challenge, they will usually come through. These good results are often overlooked in the pessimism and gloom of some failures. In the national baseball news paper “Sporting News” this past week, an article appeared concerning the son of official White House greeter Dave Pow ers, a rabid baseball fan. The account reads in part: Life was complicated last week for nine- year-old David John Powers. The boy's sole concern was pitching for his Little League team in McLean, Virginia. He struck out the side in the first inning and held the oppo sition hitless in the second. Then disappointment visited him. He had to leave the game for altar boy practice. But he hustled back from church in time for the fifth inning and hit a home run to help his team to an 11-4 victory.” The point of the story is not that religion helps win ball games. The point is that even a man in a high government post realizes the importance of training his young son in the value of service and putting God before sports. And the young lad’s willingness to sacrifice fun, thrills, and leisure time to put forth time and effort for his God. . A debt of gratitude is owed to all altar boys. For, while it is undeniably a privilege to serve Mass, yet their sacri fices should not go unrecog nized and unappreciated. This past week also saw a gathering of nearly thirty girl scouts in Cathedral troops be ing awarded merit badges in recognition of services per formed and skills acquired. There is no question that the scouting program teaches val uable lessons in working for community good and conscious ness of the needs of society. Ad altare Dei Medals and Marian awards in scouting and Eagle of the Cross awards in CYO are not just empty sym bols or snatches of tin and cloth. These awards are both a spur to efforts and a recog nition of achievements. How ever, they are a means, not an end in themselves. For the lessons learned and the ser vices performed are much more valuable than the visible me dals. A public expression of thanks here to the leaders of the boys scout and girl scout troops and to adult advisors of CYO. God himself will reward those who “teach the little ones” the right way to serve their fellow-man.
