Diocesan Archives renamed in
honor of Monsignor Bourke
By Gillian Brown
Savannah (CNS)
he door to the Diocesan Archives
at the Catholic Pastoral Center,
601 East Liberty Street, Savannah,
has a new nameplate.
Following an announcement made
by Bishop J. Kevin Boland recently,
the collection is now officially
known as the Monsignor Daniel J.
Bourke Memorial Archives, named
for the remarkable priest whose
death in 1998 saddened so many who
knew him.
Monsignor Bourke, a native of
Ireland, arrived in Georgia in 1934.
His experience spanned 63 years,
from his first appointment to Blessed
Sacrament Church in Savannah
through his service in the rural and
urban areas of the Albany and
Augusta Deaneries. Returning to
Savannah in the 1970s he continued
to be an unforgettable figure in the
city long after his official retirement
in 1976.
His memories, captured on audio-
tape in a series of interviews with
Sister Mary Faith McKean, RSM, are
themselves an enduring record of
Catholicism in the Diocese.
Parishes and schools have been
turning to the Archives in recent
months for information about the
past, in preparation for the celebra
tion of the 150th anniversary of the
Diocese.
The archives are open daily from
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Researchers
may call for an appointment (912-
238-2320) or make contact through
e-mail (Savarch@aol.com)
