“Undoing Racism”: from workshop to reality
Participants follow discussion at Undoing Racism workshop
Atlanta Organizing Committee.
During the days much was learned,
hearts spoke and were listened to,
social constructs of race were chal
lenged, stereotypes were scrutinized,
horizons were broadened, faith was
shared, barriers were broken, com
mon bonds were found and commu
nity was built and enhanced.
The participants’ Catholic faith and
belief in Jesus Christ held them
together as the lay the groundwork
for the task ahead: undoing racism.
Since the participants were sent
from their parishes or schools, the
hope was that upon return, they
would meet with their pastors or
principals and other leadership
groups in the parish to share their
experience of the weekend. The core
committee will convene a general
meeting of all the participants in
January in order to develop next
steps and strategies. Its focus for
studying racism and its effects is the
local parishes and this diocese. It
does this in good faith, in the spirit
of the Gospel and the words of
Jesus, “The Spirit of the Lord is
upon me, because the Most High has
anointed me to preach good news to
those who are poor. God has sent me
to proclaim liberty to those held cap
tive, recovery of sight to those who
are blind, and release to those in
prison, to proclaim the year of God’s
