MONDAY, JAN. 7 - MASS AS
ON EPIPHANY. According to the
liturgy of the Roman Rite, there

for each proper) and then con
densed them in the printed mis
sal to a refrain and one verse
of the psalm or other text. To
day’s Entrance Hymn acclaims
the Lord’s Epiphany and wel
comes Him.
TUESDAY, JAN. 8 - MASS AS
ON EPIPHANY. The Gradual
Hymn is a processional. Ac
companied by an "Alleluia” and
verse or by a Tract (depending
on the season), the aim of this
hymn is not to rouse and ac
claim but rather to help us un
derstand and meditate the Word
of God as we have heard it
proclaimed in the first Bible
reading of the Mass.
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 9 - MASS
AS ON EPIPHANY, "...theglory
of the Lord has risen upon you”
(Gradual). His glory has been
manifested. It remains for it
to be recognized, to be accepted
as the light of our lives, to be
preached as man’s salvation.
His Epiphany Invites us to "rise
up”, to "shine”—invites but
does not compel. The Word must
become active in us and with
our cooperation. Only then will
the Church (Jerusalem, Israel,
we as members of His Body)
His epiphany among men>
TUESDAY, JAN. 10 - MASS
AS ON EPIPHANY. The hymn
for the presentation and prepara
tion of gifts (Offertory ) has
the same theme; the wise men
as kings, representatives of all
peoples, showing their subject
ion to the manifested Word by
means of gifts.
Our singing at this point in the
Mass unites us for the oblation,
the sacrifice, to follow, which
IN GUATEMALA
will be offered under the poor,
simple sings of our human la
bor (bread and wine). We sing
our self-offering, the “spiri
tual sacrifice” of our Chris
tian lives, and our intentions.
FRIDAY, JAN. 11 - MASS AS
ON EPIPHANY. The last of
these great congregational hymns
In the Roman Liturgy is the one
we sing as we approach the holy
talbe (Communion). Now our
singing Is not so much of as
piration as of confidence, ac
ceptance, the enjoyment and re
lishing of the salvation Christ has
won once for all.
It is common song and a com
munity demonstration properly
because our sharing here effects
a unity in love. In God-builds the
solidarity of the Church. This
banquet, this Holy Supper, is
Itself an epiphany of the son-
ship and brotherhood establish
ed by Jesus.
SATURDAY, JAN. 12 - ST.
MARY ON SATURDAY. Today’s
Mass is again a Mass of Christ
mas, of Jesus' Birth, and of
Mary’s motherhood. The four
hymns of the Mass are all in
her honor. We share her joy in
her election, her faith in the
dimly understood promise of the
Lord.
Collect, Secrets and Postcom
munion (the opening prayer, the
prayer over the gifts, and the
closing prayer of the Mass)—
all refer to her as the great in
tercessor of the Church. The

Bride of God. The Spirot pos

JUDGE RULES
State Can’t Close
Private Schools
INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (NC)
A judge ruled here that the
state has no power to close two
schools operated by members
of the Amish sect, but that the
Amish must obtain accredited
teachers for the schools or send
their children to schools which
have them.
"The state has no power to
close a private school”, Dis
trict Judge Peter Van Metre
said. "The only power the state
has is to enforce the attendance
laws by proper action against

Physician, Wife to Spend
Month Aiding Indians
MARY KNOLL, N. Y. (NC) A
Michigan physician and his wife
return this January to the Gua
temala highlands to spend ano
ther month aiding impoverished
Indians with modern medicine.
This will be the second trip
for Dr. and Mrs. Joseph C. Les-
hock of East Lansing, Mich., who
last year also gave a month to
work among the 50,000 Indians
at the Maryknoll Fathers’ mis
sion in Jacaltenango.
DR. LESHOCK and his wife, a
registered nurse, told Maryknoll
officials here that life will never
be the same for them since they
saw the great need for medical
help in an undeveloped area.
The physician is now spear
heading a campaign to recruit
medical specialists willing to
give a month-long vacation for
the poor of the world.
"Most men who become doc
tors have a sense of compassion
for the sick but are not In the po

poor of the world”, he said.
"Usually a doctor’s talents lie
fallow on vacation.”
A month of service with the
poor Indians will give any doc
tor a new outlook on life, the
physician feels. The proud In
dians do not want charity so they
scrape together a token fee of
lOtf for each treatment.
DURING his "vacation,” Dr.
Leshock visited the Huehuetenan-
go region, which is under the spi
ritual care of Maryknoll Mlsslon-
ers. Until 15 years ago, the
area had been without priests for
a century, and until Dr. Leshock
came, had only witch doctors to
care for the sick.
Since his return, he has been
recruiting doctors and has inte
rested the Catholic Medical Mis
sion Bureau in a plan to have
physicians* guilds support medi
cal mission work In some area
for a year.
Doctors need nothing but their
talents. The Maryknoll Fathers
have inspired the natives to build
hospitals and clinics, Dr. Les
hock reported. A new 40-bed
hospital is nearing completion
in Jacaltenango. Equipment and
drugs donated by American doc
tors are available. *

Three medical men who will
serve In 1963 are of as many
faiths. One are has more non-
Catholic than Catholic doctors.
At present, Jacaltenango has
the services of Sister Rose Cor
dis, M.D., the only doctor for
the Indians. But she has many
cases for doctors from the Unit
ed States who will volunteer this
year.
Sister's latest letter, Dr. Les
hock said, informed him that 25
patients with cleft palate are
awaiting the services of a plas
tic sergeon in addition to pa
tients that need operations in
his own medical specialty, ob
stetrics and genecology.
,f A month of work among the
poor gives a doctor a whole new
lease on life. He comes back
twice the man, twice the doctor,
twice the husband and father,
and his home is like a mansion
to him,” he said.
Pope Gives
Dublin Its
Gift Back
DUBLIN (NC) A chalice pre
sented to the Holy See by the
Irish government three decades
ago has been returned to Dublin
as a token of the affection of
His Holiness Pope John XXI11.
The chalice was presented by
the Irish government to the
papal legate to the Internation
al Eucharistic Congress held
here in 1932.
POPE John sent the chalice
recently to Archbishop John C.
McQuatd of Dubline, who has
given it to the Dublin pro-ca
thedral.
Accompanying the chalice
was a message from Amleto
Cardinal Clcognani, papal Sec
retary of State, who said the
gift was intended as "a token
of (Pope John’s) benelovence”
and a memento of the late Pope
Pius XI and Lorenzo Cardinal
Lauri, who was papal legate to
the Eucharistic Congress.

THE CASE centers on two
private schools operated by the
Amish in northern Buchanan
County, Iowa. County officials
had sought a temporary injunc
tion to close the schools because
they lacked certified teachers.
The effect of judge Van
Metre’s ruling is to leave the
schools open while requiring;
them to obtain accredited teach
ers or face the loss of their
students. County officials said
they would ask public school
district authorities to take ac
tion to see to it that the child

educated by certified teachers.
At a December 11 hearing
here, a spokesman for the
Amish contended that the re
ligious liberty guarantees of the
U. S. Constitution gave them the
right to operate their schools
as they wish.
The spokesman said they be
lieve the morals of their child

when the schools had non-Amish

ers are too expensive; and that
the Amish consider an eighth
grade education sufficient for
their simple life.
