"ON YOUR cooperation de pends largely the practical out come of the new conciliar per iod." The Pope denied that the council is a trial of strength among opposing powers "as some naive and incautious jour nalists have insinuated." He called it rather "the expression of one supreme power itself, which expresses itself with one single voice resulting from the voice of the council members Joined to the sovereign voice of the Pope." Wesley. nating moment of the council, the Pope said: "And so that this may come to pass...and so that the great aims that the council has set itself may be achieved, we will go in a few days time in humble and brief pilgrimage to the land of Je sus..." The Pope then asked what is the nature of the journey. "IS IT A tourist excursion? A political expedient? An eva sion of duties that demand we ORTHODOX LEADER should be here and that tie us down? The Pope then recalled the legend that St. Peter, fleeing persecution in Rome, met Christ, who approached in an opposite direction. Peter asked: "Quo vadis, Domine? Where are you going, Lord." Christ an swered that he was going to Rome to be crucified again— meaning to take Peter’s place in Rome where he belonged de spite the persecution that would eventually overtake him. "FOR FIFTEEN years," he said, "the magnificent country side that Is viewed from the heights of Mount Zion has been scarred by signs of warfare, barbed wire entanglements, bunkers and trenches. Three days ago, all these signs be gan rapidly to disappear, thanks to the work of men who, with out distinction of faith or race, are getting ready to welcome the Holy Father." In his traditional Christmas message, Latin Rite Patriarch Alberto Gorl of Jerusalem made no special mention of the Pope's pilgrimage. HOWEVER, HE said "we in vite Christians of all the world to join us In our prayers and ask the Divine Redeemer for peace and happiness for this Holy Land, her people and her governors, and to ask as well for brotherly love and harmony between nations." According to the Vatican Radio, as soon as the plane bearing the Pope and his party is sighted over Jordanian ter ritory, it will be escorted to the Amman Airport by aircraft of the Jordanian Air Force. A 21-gun salute will greet the Pope when the plane lands. Shortly afterwards, the Jordan ian Ambassador to Italy, Ed mond Roch; Archbishop Lino Zanlnl, Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem: and the Chief of Protocol of the Jordanian court will board the airliner. KING HUSSEIN of Jordan will greet the Pope as soon as he alights from the plane, followed by various government mini sters heads of various diplo matic missions, and Latin and Eastern Rite patriarchs and bishops. After a brief stop at the air port, a motor cortege bound for the Old City will be formed, headed by a car in which the governor of Amman will ride. All along the route troops will accord military honors to the distinguished pilgrim, and monks and nuns of various re ligious orders, along with thou sands of lay Catholics, will line the streets. IN THE AFTERNOON, the Pope is scheduled to pay a visit on foot to the Via Do lorosa (The Way of the Cross) in the Old City, offer Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and pray at Christ’s tomb. In the evening, his sche dule, subject to change, calls for a drive to the Church of the Agony In the Garden of Geth- semane. On Jan. 5, the Pope will drive to Nazareth, crossing in to Israel at Jenin, north of Jerusalem. On his return to Jordan, he will pass through the Mandelbaum Gate, His Itinerary for Jan, 6 calls for a 10-mlle drive to Bethlehem, where he will say a Mass at the site where Christ was born. His projected meeting with Pat riarch Athenagoraswill befit ted Into his Jan. 6 schedule. ACCORDING TO Vatican sources, Pope Paul will carry a wooden cross when he visits the Via Dolorosa, in com memoration of Christ's ordeal on the way to Calvary. It was not disclosed how big the cross would be, or whether the Pope would stop at all of the 14 Stations. Some sources said priests present would readfrom the Gospel in 30 different lan guages as the Pope walks along the Street of Sorrows, NEW CONVERTS SUFFER Vietnam Attacks On Church Drop QUI NHON,Vietnam--Cathollc8 in parts of central Vietnam are still being Intimidated, but at tacks on them by Buddhists and others have decreased. That is the gist of reports brought by Catholics arriving here from outlying areas of thl s province (Blnh Dinh) and the adjoining coastal provinces of Phu Yen and Qusng Ngai, THE ATTACKS depend large ly on the attitude of the chief of district, who is usually a military officer, according to reports. If he is Just and firm, they do not happen. If a good district chief Is changed, the anti-Christian elements are ready to take advantage of the new man. If the province chief li anti-Catholic, It Is all the worse. Catholics have been attacked in two of the 10 administrat ive districts of Biih Dinh pro vince and one of the two now seems to be calm, in Phu Yen province one district, a large one, has been the scene of attacks on Catholics. They have been victimized in about half of the districts of Qusng Ngal province, according to re ports, IN SON TINH district, Qusng Ngsl« Catholic houses have been burned. In one parish an old sacristan was beaten four times, according to reports. Catholics complain they are not allowed to leave their vill age to go to Mess without a special permit from those In control. In another village cat echumens (persons preparing for Baptism) were seized and blindfolded and their hands were tied behind their backs. They were brought to the edge of a .*iver and made to kneel down. Their captors asked them: "Who were the assassins of the bonzes? Where are the nails and sacks for killing bonzes? " When they could not answer, they were kicked into the river, still with their hands bound, according to reports. Half drowned, they were pulled out and questioned again to make them accuse themselves or others. In general the "old" Catholics stand their ground. From half to three-fourths of the new converts In these pro vinces also hold fast, it is esti mated. The others are scared into hiding their religious ob jects and staying away from Mass and night prayers in the church. "Actual apostasies are very few," according to a Vietnamese priest who has been in touch with most parts of the Qui Nhon diocese. FRED A.
