10 GEORGIA BULLETIN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 1968 Canterbury Favors Intercommunion LONDON (RNS) -Archbishop Michael Ramsey of Canterbury endorsed here Eucharistic intercommunion between Anglicans and other Churches as an aid in fuller realization of church unity. The head of the world Anglican Communion participated in discussions on intercommunion held during the decennial Lambeth Conference, composed of all bishops of the Anglican tradition. Some 460 prelates were present. He said that Christian unity was awaiting a new fullness which could be helped by Anglicans in all parts of the world looking forward instead of backward. The issue of intercommunion was contained in the report of a Lambeth section on Renewal of the Church in Unity. The report suggested that intercommunion be “allowable and in many cases advisable when an advanced stage has been reached in unity negotiations.” Bishops referred the entire report to its drafting committee for further work before it was put to a vote, but prelates from many parts of the world reacted favorably to the intercommunion proposal. (In New York, Canon Charles Guilbert of the Episcopal Executive Council explained to RNS that “intercommunion” in the Anglican tradition refers to official concordats between Churches by which mutual recognition of sacraments and ministries is made. He also said that the phrase “full communion” is more descriptive of such relationships than is “intercommunion.”) Bishops from Scotland, Iraq, India, Ireland, the U. S., and England were among those favoring establishment of reciprocal communion with Churches' with which Anglicans are in unity negotiations. A section of the unity section report less enthusiastically received was that dealing with the papacy. Archbishop Ramsey suggested three paragraphs be omitted. These paragraphs stated: “The papacy is an historic reality whose claim must be carefully weighed in any scheme for the reunion of Christendom. No matter which district you live in, Blaine Mabry asks for your vote and support. “Within the whole college of bishops and in ecumenical council, it is evident that there must be a president whose office involves a personal concern for the affairs of the whole Church. This president might most fittingly be the occupant of the historic see of Rome. “Although as we understand them at present, we are unable to accept the claims of the papacy to infallibility and immediate and universal jurisdiction, we believe that a considerable majority of Anglicans would be prepared to accept the Pope as having a primacy of love, implying both honor and service, in a renewed and reunited Church, as would seem right on both historical and pragmatic grounds.” Total Submission VATICAN CITY (RNS) - Roman Catholics who cannot see the reasons for Pope Paul’s encyclical on birth control have no right to challenge it but must accept it humbly and with “complete submission,” Msgr. Ferdinando Lambruschini, prominent Vatican theologian, said in an article published here. Archbishop Ramsey said the paragraphs were “a mixture of prophecy and guess. A majority of Anglicans would find it a difficult question and completely new to them.” Bishop Stephen F. Bayne, vice-president of the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church in the U. S., reflected the opinion of many Lambeth participants when he observed that it was not known how many Anglicans would favor the suggested position on the papacy. He said the issue of infallibility and the recent encyclical on birth control made the question particularly complicated. The speculation was that the paragraphs would be eliminated before a final vote was taken. Bishops attending the conference spent a full weekend in parishes in England and Scotland. They participated in Sunday services. The article appeared in the weekly newspaper L’Osservatore della Domenica to which Msgr. Lambruschini contributes regularly. Its very strict interpretation of the encyclical’s binding force had special interest because of the author’s widely-reported and often cited previous statement on the encyclical. At the press conference in which the document was made public, Msgr. Lambruschini had said that it was not considered infallible and that the doctrine it contains is subject to later revision. The final week opened with a Missionary Service in London’s White City Stadium. Sixty pairs of bishops administered communion. Among the chief concelebrants were Presiding Bishop John E. Hines of the Episcopal Church in the U.S., and Archbishop Angus Campbell-Maclnnes of Jerusalem. Father Keaney OLA Assistant “He who refuses the decision of the authentic magisterium and who, worse still, encourages others to refuse it, is obviously in error,” the article said. “In traditional theological language, we would call the statements of such persons brash and scandalous.” DORAVILLE DO-IT- YOURSELF CENTER Paint - Plywood Shelving - Picture Frames Made - To - Order.
