GEORGIA BULLETIN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 1968 9 »• <• EDITOR: In scanning the editorial comment (Aug. 8, 1968) of the Georgia Bulletin this thought comes to mind. Is it possible to be a truly responsible Catholic and yet sincerely expect the right to disagree with or defy an authentic pronouncement of the Pope? Is would seem that one ceases to be a Catholic at this point. If, on the other hand, you are referring to those who are truly Catholic and believe in the teaching authority of the Pope but at times have difficulty accepting and understanding certain teachings, then far from ignoring or dismissing them from the Church, the Holy Father has addressed them directly in Section 25 of his document. Why should we now continue endlessly to study the wor ds : of theologians and so-called theologians who do not themselves agree? In the hope of perhaps arriving at a majority opinion on the matter? It would seem at times that the policy of rule-by-majority is becoming identified with infallibility, with a tendency to forget that Christ left the keys to His kingdom in the hands of one man under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Mrs. R. Mussell Decatur EDITOR: Thanks for giving space to my public support of Pope Paul and his encyclical on Human Life. I appreciate the fair treatment. A word about the accompanying news item may be in 'order. The RNS release said that “20 of the 24 Americans who were delegates to the Third World Congress of the Laity...have signed a statement implicity criticizing the encyclical.” I enclose two lists of delegates, one furnished me in Washington and the other provided at the registration desk in Rome. Both show 30 delegates, not 24. The RNS story went on to say that criticism of the action was supported by Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Crowley and Rawson • L. Wood. Please note that these three were not delegates to the Lay Congress, but experts invited for their special knowledge. If you add the 25 invited experts to the 30 delegates, you have a total of 55 laymen from the United States in Rome. The RNS story sounds as though only 20 of the 55 could be found to criticize Pope Paul. Loyalty to the Vicar of Christ seems to be the majority view. Louis C. Fink Atlanta EDITOR: This is an open letter in response to Mr. Louis Fink’s request in this column last week asking that those who profess loyalty to Pope Paul write to Mr. Fink. As one loyal to Pope Paul, I wish to refer you to the headline on the front page of the Georgia Bulletin dated exactly a year ago today (August 17, 1967) that reads as follows: “It was too smug. Pyramid Concept of the Church won’t do - Hallinan”. The article below this headline goes on to quote Archbishop Hallinan: “The new form of the Catholic Church is not a novelty nor an invention. It is a correction. The new form is a rediscovery of the gospels - what God wants his Church to be. In other times other shapes may have been effective, but in a world grown used to self-reliance, dialogue, involvement and the democratic way of life, the pyramid concept of the Church just will not do. The substance remains. It is the shape that is changed. “What is the shape of things to come? A great deal more freedom, much flexibility. And lest these two conditions might destroy the skeleton and flesh of our faith, we need a growing fidelity to Christ and those He chooses to carry out His will - laymen, religious, priests and bishops. “For centuries the Church has been pictured as a pyramid - the pope at the peak, the laity at the bottom, the bishops, priests, deacons and religious in between. “It was symmetrical, pleasing to look at, easy to understand, but it was closed and tight, a little too smug, a little too secure. “It failed to catch the high spirits and daring of fire cast upon the earth, a light burning on the mountain, a fishing boat setting out from the shore, a net cast into the sea. The shape of the pyramid satisfied the eye, but not the mind and certainly not the heart of man.” I submit that in the light of the teachings of Vatican II as exemplified by the above comments of Archbishop Hallinan, true loyalty to Pope Paul is not expressed by a slavish, unquestioning agreement to everything he declares openly, but rather by a free and honest expression of opinion, made openly in faith, hope and love. Henry L. de Give Atlanta EDITOR: Though not a member of the Community of Christ Our Brother, I would like to express my agreement with the views of Father Foust on “Of Human Life” and my admiration for his courage in making his views known. I feel sure, based on past advice and counseling 1 have received, that there are other priests in the diocese who feel as Father Foust does and it is disappointing that they have not seen fit to speak out. As the mother of two in diapers, it might be assumed that my concern is purely personal; this is not so. By the grace of God, mine are fat, happy and beautiful babies. The sight of their chubby, dimpled legs only makes it more heartbreaking to see pictures of children with legs like gnarled sticks and faces full of grief and horror at age two. AT LA VISTA EDITOR: We applaud the Georgia Bulletin’s editorial policy, and were especially pleased to read the open-minded discussions on the Holy Father’s encyclical, “Humanae Vitae”. The Georgia Bulletin is practicing good journalism at its best - that is, honest representation of the news. It is also serving as a vital organ of the Church in our archdiocese by keeping its readers informed, and by stimulating thoughtful study of today’s many controversies. May it continue to serve our archdiocese in such a manner. Dave and Ellie Clem Atlanta EDITOR: The Society for the Propagation of the Faith advertisement pleading for funds to aid “the two thirds of humanity living in poverty and destitution— every year, 40 million die of starvation” bordered by articles congratulating Pope Paul VI “for his defense of the sanctity of life and dignity of the human person” made page 5, Aug. 8, 1968 issue of The Georgia Bulletin the most chillingly ironical page of literature I have ever read.
