GEORGIA BULLETIN, THURSDAY, AUGUST, 29, 1968 7 5#t Letters To The Editor “HERE we are,” said four nuns just arrived at Holy Cross parish. Left to right, Sister Lauriann Keating, Sister Marie Anne Flanagan, Sister Marie Russell Holland, and Sister Ann Paula Gascogne. Four Nuns Join Parish; Will Serve Holy Cross EDITOR: Regarding Louis C. Fink’s letter on Pope Paul’s encyclical of Human' Life; my husband and 1 support in full our most Holy f ’Father’s reiteration of the natural law. In this day of emphasis on the bible some men must have overlooked Christ’s statement, “Suffer little children to come unto me.” Perhaps with modem speed reading, to them, it reads, “Have no little children who will have to suffer.” Four new parishoners at Holy Cross parish are the Sister Servants Of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. They want to be known as ‘parish people.’ Sisters Marie Anne Flanagan and Marie Russell Holland are planning the school of religion program for the parish in cooperation with the board of education. Sisters Lauriann Keating and Ann Paula Gascogne will teach full-time at St. Pius X high school. “We plan to work together with the parish community. Although our main work is religious education, we are interested in all the parish activities and want to be known as parish people. When school starts in September, parents at Holy Cross center will begin a five-week adult training program to prepare them as cathechists in the school of religion. There is a new emphasis on the parental responsibility for the religious education of the children. Sister Marie Russell said, “Many parents have told us that they are aware of the changes in the Church, but they don’t know how to explain them to their children.” The Sessions include courses in theology, methodology and child psychology. “In the past, religious education stressed dogma and doctrine. Teaching, telling and memorizing have been replaced by contemporary techniques that stress alive personal relationships with God,” said Sister Marie Anne. The emphasis in religious education today depends upon making the church a part of life experience, a new religious dimension that encourages children to ask questions, participate in discussions, the nuns said. Her name was inadvertently included on' this list and is an error. As chairman of the group issuing the statement, I request that you print a statement to this effect in the next issue of the Georgia Bulletin. Thank you for your cooperation. Dennis A. Henry Atlanta EDITOR: In the August 22 issue of The Bulletin eighty-two people signed a petition and urged all Catholics who share their opinions to join with them in speaking out on Pope Paul’s encyclical concerning birth control. The statement defines the subject of birth control as an intimate and complex human relationship. Complex it will always be, but in making statements to city and church newspapers plus urging others to speak out and join with them in public and published statements hardly keeps the matter personal or intimate. If those who oppose the Pope’s encyclical find they are denied their individual freedom and believe their consciences are inviolable should have no uarrel with the Pope’s statements, their consciences are their guides. They have no need for support of what an inviolable conscience dictates. A moral issue is not determined right or wrong by a majority rule. organize to urge others to publicly endorse a statement on a subject of personal conscience. The control of births is a serious world problem that will in time be resolved by a meeting ground eventually arrived at by science and religion. Meanwhile, it remains to the individual a personal and intimate matter. Keep it that way. Mrs. Jarrette A.
