10 GEORGIA BULLETIN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1968 Ungraded Language Arts Program At OLA School Sister Mary Valentina, principal of Our Lady of the Assumption School, has announced that OLA will introduce an ungraded language arts program-reading, writing, spelling-for the children in kindergarten through third grade. She hopes to extend the ungraded program to all subjects in the primary grades. Mrs. Paul Kenneth Vonk, associate .professor in the School of Education, Oglethorpe College, has been helping Sister Valentina and will continue to help her throughout the year. Mrs. Vonk spoke on the advantages, of the ungraded school at the OLA Cafetorium. » She explained that the nongraded school is “the natural evolution from the mistaken notion that all children are ready for schooling at age six.” the schooling to fit each individual child. “IF A child is permitted to self-progress,” explained Mrs. Vonk, “he will progress much more rapidly. If he is allowed to seek information that interests him he will seek his own level, and his standards will be set high. If a child is forced to learn, he will become frustrated. If he can work at his own pace without being pushed, he will learn at a much more rapid pace.” Mrs. Vonk has bachelor and masters degrees from the University of Miami. She was appointed adjunct professor by both Florida State University arj German Bishops Urge Discussion She compared the old system to buying thirty size eight suits and expecting all children to fit them. They invited all Catholics to participate in the discussions according to their position and competence in the people of God. The bishops had originally been scheduled to meet later in September, but advanced their meeting to August in order to discuss the encyclical as soon as possible. Shortly before their meeting it was reported that 1,500 West GermanCatholics had signed a letter asking the German Bishops’ Conference to urge the Pope to revise the encyclical. SISTER Valentina became interested in the nongraded school last November after reading about it in The National Elementary Principal. After evaluating the curriculum of OLA she felt this program would be beneficial to the children. In December the primary teachers at OLA observed a nongraded school in Macon, Ga. and were impressed by the experience. - They came back to OLA and regrouped the first grades. The children had originally been divided into three groups within each classroom, the “slow, average, and bright”. Now all first grade children and some second grade children were regrouped into eight ability groups ranging from very low to very high. The groups were established through teacher evaluation and test scores from the basal reader and remained flexible. This provided a more accurate placement for each child. SISTER Mary Valentina, principal of Our Lady of the Assumption School and Mrs. Paul Kenneth Vonk, associate professor in the School of Education, Oglethorpe College. Mrs. Vonk is helping Sister establish an ungraded Language Arts at OLA in the primary grades. IN APRIL, 1968, Sister Valentina attended a workshop on the ungraded system which was sponsored by the Science Research Association under the direction of Mr. Robert Linstone, Educational Coordinator from the University of Hartford. When she returned, Sister was determined to inaugurate the program at OLA, confining it initially to the Language Arts. Percentiles from the SRA Achievement Tests togehfer with teacher analysis determined the instructional level of the child. A profile card was completed on each child indicating the intellectual, social, emotional and physical characteristics of the child together with his present placement. The Metropolitan Readiness Test was administered in May to all children who would enter the primary program in the fall. The children will be retested in August to determine if any matuation has taken place. OBJECTIVES for each level of instruction ;have been determined. When the child completes the objectives he moves on. This is opposed to the traditional system whereby in every grade and every subject area there was a certain body of knowledge which it assumed every child could master. The purpose of this ungraded language arts is to remove grade barriers so that children can progress at their own rate of speed without being pushed beyond their capacity on the one hand, or without being held back from progressing on the other. .It takes into consideration, the slow leanrer, the average child, and the gifted student. 261-3040 Free Inspection
