BY TRACY EARLY
NEW YORK (NC) -
Word that Cardinal
Terence Cooke suffers
from acute leukemia
touched the heart of New
York with immediate
force.
People went to St.
Patrick’s Cathedral or their
parish churches to pray
and light candles. Priests
of the archdiocese
remembered the cardinal
in a special way in their
Masses. Public officials and
unknown citizens alike
voiced their shock and
concern.
“I join all New Yorkers
-- Catholics, Protestants
and Jews - in praying for
the cardinal’s recovery,
and part of my prayer is a
thanksgiving for the years
he has served the people of
New York, preaching,
leading, healing,” said
Gov. Mario Cuomo of New
York after the cardinal’s
illness was announced
Aug. 26.
Sen. Daniel Patrick
Moynihan (D-N.Y.) said,
“This is a time for prayer.
There is not a man in New
York who would be so
much missed.”
“I wish him godspeed,”
said Sen. Alphonse
D’Amato (R-N.Y.). “My
prayers are with him.” *
Mayor Edward Koch
called Cardinal Cooke “the
Open For
pre-eminent spiritual
leader” of New York.
“Just by his moral
presence he has had an
incredible impact on the
quality of life in our city.”

After the archdiocese
made the announcement,
New York’s afternoon
"The cardinal
friend...."
A short time before the Archdiocese of New
York released the story on Cardinal Cooke’s
condition, Monsignor Charles McDonough, secretary
to the Cardinal, called Archbishop Thomas A.
Donnellan of Atlanta.
“The cardinal is a personal friend,” said the
archbishop, “and he wanted his friends to know
before the statement was released. I am dreadfully
saddened but am in great admiration of his priestly
acceptance of God’s will.”
Archbishop Donnellan was a priest of the
Archdiocese of New York and was ordained some
years before the cardinal.
“His brother Joe was with me in the seminary,”
recalled the archbishop. “However, he left before
ordination. The cardinal’s sister Catherine is a close
friend of my sister Nancy. Our prayers go to his
family at this time.”
Cardinal Cooke was secretary to Cardinal
Spellman some years after Archbishop Donnellan
held that same post. Both men also worked together
in the New York Chancery. - ncb
