Summit Meeting
Pope Sends Personal Message
BY SISTER MARY ANN
WALSH
VATICAN CITY (NC) -
Pope John Paul II urged
leaders of the United States
and the Soviet Union to
overcome mutual mistrust
and work for peace.
The pope announced Nov.
17 that he had sent
messages to President
Reagan and Soviet leader
Mikhail Gorbachev regar
ding the Nov. 19-20 arms
control summit in Geneva,
Switzerland.
The Vatican did not
release the content of the
messages.
The pope told thousands
of people standing in pour
ing rain in St. Peter’s
Square for his Angelus talk
that the summit, the first
such meeting to be held in
more than six years, had
“stirred up comments,
forecasts and hopes
throughout the world” even
before its start. He said that
“expectations and in
terest” in the talks are
“most vivid.”
“In view of the meeting,”
the pope said, “I have sent a
personal message to the
Pope John Paul II
two personalities, express
ing hope that from their
talks will come the basis for
the development of a
dialogue which overcomes
mistrust, banishes the risk
of war and favors peace, in
a context of fairness and
justice.”
The pope also said that
“no one can hide from the
difficulties” faced in
reaching agreement “on
the problems to be examin
ed, especially the arms
race.”

The message to President
Reagan was delivered
through U.S. Ambassador
to the Holy See William
Wilson, who received it
Nov. 16 and “immediately
cabled it to President
Reagan in Geneva,” em
bassy spokesman William
Barnes said Nov. 17.
The president and Mrs.
Reagan left Washington for
Geneva early Nov. 16.
Before departing, the presi

to ease “suspicion and
mistrust” between the
superpowers.
Before the summit,
Reagan administration of
ficials said the president
would propose a joint state
ment making a formal com

Reagan would consider it
an important achievement
even if reduction levels are
not specified.
Pope John Paul repeated

honest dialogue and sincere
negotiations based on
mutual respect, coupled
with a realistic assessment

partners.”
He added that those who
seek peace “will seek to

numbers strikes fear into
people’s hearts.”
