St. Joseph's In Athens Dedication Set Dec. 6
"With heart full of joy we reconsecrate our church to
God’s glory and the service of His people.’’
These words will mark the beginning of the dedication of
Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, Athens, on Dec. 6. The 7
p.m. Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Thomas A.
Donnellan. Concelebrants will be Father Richard A.
Kieran, pastor; Father Don Kenny, associate pastor; and
approximately 30 visiting priests including former pastors.
Also present will be members of the Downtown Athens
Ministerial Association.
A reception in the parish hall will follow the service.
The dedication marks the completion of the second phase
of the building and development program which included
the renovation of the church and former school building ad
jacent to the church. The remodeled school building now
serves as a rectory and parish center with offices for the
clergy and the newly initiated ministry — Catholic Social
Services. The completely renovated church has been ex
panded from a seating capacity of 240 to 480 persons.
Throughout renovation, the thrust was to maintain, as
much as possible, the character and atmosphere of the
original structures. This has been accomplished. The cost
of Phase II renovation will be $900,000.
The site of Saint Joseph’s Church on the corner of Prince
Avenue and Pulaski St. was purchased in 1881. At that time
there were 10 Catholic families in Athens. Mass was
celebrated in a wooden building which stood on the property
and which formerly housed the first law school at the
University of Georgia. Priests came from Atlanta, Macon
and Augusta to minister to the few parishioners.
In July, 1910, Father Hairy Clark was assigned as first
resident priest. The territory of the parish at that time con
sisted of 23 counties or 11,500 square miles. Today, the boun
dary of Saint Joseph’s covers five counties — Clarke,
Jackson, Madison, Oconee and Oglethorpe — and serves
some 900 households, an increase of 33% in the last two
years.
Phase I of the building program consisted of the construc
tion of a new education building, completed in September
1984 at a cost of $846,000. The 18,400 square foot building in
cludes 12 classrooms, library and offices for the parish
school and religious education program. The building is
utilized by the elementary school (K-8), the Sunday
religious education program and by a variety of adult
education programs.

will be asked to pledge to
the best of your financial
ability. This pledge will be
in addition to your weekly
church support,” he said.
Campaign chairmen are
Joseph Boland and Dr.
Ralph Frey.
The new church will have
seating for 1,000 people;
thus making it the largest
church in the Archdiocese
of Atlanta. In addition to the
sanctuary, nave and nar-
thex, there will be a 50-seat
chapel for daily Mass, two
reconciliation rooms, a
choir area and an ushers’
room and bride’s room.
The complex will include
administration and educa
tion areas and a parish hall
large enough to accom
modate 350 people. The ad
ministration area will have
the pastor’s and associate
pastor’s offices, CCD coor
dinator’s office, youth
minister’s office and a con
ference room/library; the
education area will have
ten classrooms, a nursery,
adult education room and
choir rehearsal room; in
the parish hall area will be a
large hall for social occa
sions, a stage and kitchen.
The project, which will
cost $2 million, will be
located on 12 acres on Ben
King Road. If plans go ac
cording to schedule, con
struction will begin in the
spring of next year.
From a small beginning
in 1981 of only 90 families,
St. Catherine’s parish has
grown to 509 families.
Because of the rapid growth
rate of the parish and the
projected growth rate of the
geographic location, plans
for a new church had to be
made so it would be able to
meet not only the present
parishioners’ worship
needs, but the needs of
future parishioners. Mass
is presently being held in a
small church that was pur
chased from United
Methodist Church in 1981.
The building dates back to
1902.
Kickoff date for the fund
raising drive is Monday,
Nov. 25. Volunteers will
begin visiting parish
families the weekend
following Thanksgiving
Day.
