“Cabaret Theater" Recalls
50 Years At Christ The King
BY KATHRYN
BUCKLEY SMITH
"Fifty years of ser
vice...fifty years of wor
ship... building our com
munity...struggling to find
unity...nine presidents, five
mayors, five pastors...war
and peace; love and birth;
death and glory...Tonight
we recall them all...And
tonight we celebrate!
Celebrate tonight!”
Be delightfully surprised
and entertained by what
has transpired in the last 50
years at the Cathedral of
Christ the King. “Come
celebrate” for an evening
at the Cathedral of Christ
the King’s 50th anniversary
Cabaret Theater, marking
the Cathedral’s anniver
sary in 1987.
Beginning on the front
lawn of the Cathedral, the
action moves quickly to St.
Peter’s Gate, to a period
rife with rumors of secret
tunnels, and “Big Tim’s”
spanking machine. Time is
spent reminiscing with
Monsignor Joseph E. Moy-
lan in his black clerics and
a special appearance is
made by Monsignor John
McDonough in his Hawai
ian shirt. The transition
from Latin to English in the
liturgy is duly noted.
The audience follows a
weeping church mouse, a
hungry church mouse,
even a singing church
mouse through 50 years of
“prejudice and change,
hatred and charity, delu
sions and true vision.”
With many tales recalled
and yarns disclosed the
Cathedral’s golden years
are remembered in a truly
grand celebration.
This cabaret is written,
produced and acted by
Cathedral parishioners.
Richard Farnsworth is the
playwright and director is
Jim Doherty. Music direc
tor is Mark Haas.

mond Shaw was homilist and his wife, Susan, was lector for
the Mass.
The renewal of marriage vows by parish couples has
become an annual event in the parish. Two couples, Hugo
and Mercades Montes, who have been married 49years, and
Danny and Bonnie Collins, who have been married about
three months, took lighted candles to the couples in the pews,
passing the flame from one to the other prior to the recitation
of vows, which was led by the archbishop.
Following the Mass, a reception with a six-tier wedding
cake and a disc jockey playing favorite tunes took place. The
celebration was coordinated by Jerry and Cathy Monda, a
parish couple active in Marriage Encounter.
