It was with some trepida tion that I informed our Ab bot, Dom Armand. that my friend Tom had offered to explain and "demonstrate" his ministry to the comrau- nity.here at the monastery. Tom Franzak, with his group of three men, were spending a couple of days with us for P & R (prayer and rest), 1 explained to our Abbot how Tom has devoted many years to youth ministry, using his original music as a catalyst for sharing with the younger generation. With some hesitation permission was granted, with the pro viso that the volume be at a comfortable level. As I watched Tom, Larry, Bill, and Steve set up their equipment in the evening I became rather apprehensive. This was the "low volume" equipment'.’ Before the program began 1 took a position in the rear in order to bolt for the door in the event the community turned on me in anger. After a brief introduction the program began My fears were allayed and I felt vindicated when I perceived the response Tom was receiving. His music is not "churchie," nor is it "rock," in the cur rent vogue. His song entitl ed "The Call," based on the prophet Jeremiah, has special significance for me, having been recently or dained to the priesthood. Tom Franzak s inimitable introduction and rendition of "Stuff" (materialism) involved all of us, in an unintimidating manner His personality is such that his rapport with his au dience appears to be on a one to one direct basis. He "reaches out," he touches and communicates ex cellently Anyone who is able to involve staid Trap- pists monks to the extent of joining in song, and shouting "whahoo" while applauding, just has to be Sandy Springs Chapel Funeral Directors A Personalized Service For All Faiths 136 Mt. We were fortunate in having a preview of Tom's "Build Up The Body (of the Kingdom)," based on Ephesians 4, which he has been commissioned to write and perform at the Super Dome next fall dur ing our Holy Father's visit. Music being a universal language, the performance also had a unifying effect as I watched our Venezue lan group (whoare with us in preparation for the founda tion of a new monastery in Venezuela) bounce and sway along with us Yan kees. Would that we had more such men to help us break the barriers between generations and ethnic groups. (Father Donarski be longs to the Trappist Mon astery in Conyers.) PRESIDENTIAL VISIT — Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalyn, are among those touring the exhibit of the Shroud of Turin in Atlanta since the exhibit will be losing its space at the Omni center at Easter. Above, Carter examines the photographic replica of the Shroud, which has been examined by scientists in detail in recent years to try to disprove the belief that it is the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. Carbon 14 dating tests are scheduled for the near future. Below, the Carters take part in a tour of the exhibit along with special guests and delighted tourists who happened to be there. Center director Rev. Kim Dreisbach, at right, led the tour. The exhibit still has no new facili ty to move to after Easter. : : Senior Citizens LOW COST LIFE INSURANCE PREFERRED RISK MONTHLY RATES Your Aoe ‘100,000 250,000 500,000 65 82 201 387 70 144 356 679 75 253 628 1151 80 639 1594 3156 85 1200 3000 6000 • Policy immediately in full force.
