PAGE 15 — The Georgia Bulletin, March 19, 1987 U.S. Bishops Meet With Pope About Fall Visit BY JERRY FILTEAU WASHINGTON (NC)—A top-level delegation of U.S. cardinals and bishops was to meet with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican March 18-21 to discuss the pope's visit to the United States this fall. The four active U.S. car dinals, four top officers of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, nine bishops of host cities on the papal route, and other key NCCB officials are to form the delegation. Pope John Paul II is to visit cities in Florida, South Carolina. Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, California and BY JOHN PERROTTA WASHINGTON (NC) - Justice Antonin Scalia, one of two Catholics on the Su preme Court, told a Wash ington audience March 8 he supports traditional church rituals that set Catholics apart. The “small, obtrusive, annoying displays of our religion,” such as ashes on the forehead, Friday abstinence and rules for fasting for Communion, Michigan on his Sept. 10-19 trip. The Rome trip “ will give the bishops the opportunity to present information and views on issues affecting the life of the church in the United States. " Russell Shaw, public affairs spokesman for the U.S. bishops, said March 10 in announcing the meeting. With tensions between the Vatican and the U.S. Catholic Church increasing markedly in the past year or so, Father Richard McBrien, dean of theology at the University of Notre Dame, recently suggested that the bishops’ visit to make Catholics feel “a little weird” and “strong enough to obey the out-of-step teachings” of the church on such issues as abortion, contraception and divorce, he said. He made the comments to 250 people at a breakfast at Casa Italiana, affiliated with Holy Rosary Church, a Washington parish for Italian Catholics. Displays of special Catholic rituals are “a con stant reminder that we are. Rome could be a watershed event in the life of the U.S. church. But Shaw said the meeting “is not perceived by the participants as a watershed.” Father McBrien had sug gested that the bishops might use the occasion to respond forcefully to negative views among Vatican officials of the U.S. church, but Shaw said the meeting’s focus would be on preparing the pope for his U.S. visit, not on long-term issues. The four active cardinals on the U.S. delegation to after all. different,” he said. “It is only if one has that sense of differentness — not animosity toward others in any sense, but differentness — that one has the chance of being strong enough to obey” more significant church doctrines, he said. Scalia said what is 'perfectly lawful and perfectly permissible for everyone else, including our very close non-Catholic Rome are Cardinals John Krol of Philadelphia, Joseph Bernardin of Chicago, Bernard Law of Boston and John O'Cornor of New York. The four NCCB officers are Archbishop John May of St. Louis, president; Archbishop Daniel Pilarc- zyk of Cincinnati, vice president; Bishop John McGann of Rockville Cen tre, N.Y., treasurer; and Auxiliary Bishop Eugene Marino of Washington, secretary. The nine bishops of the host dioceses are Arch bishop Edward McCarthy of Miami; Bishop Ernest Unterkoefler of Charleston, friends, is not necessarily lawful and permissible for us.” “The ways of the world and the ways of Christ’s law are not always the same.... Our religion makes some special demands,” he said. Speaking on the first Sun day in Lent, Scalia said Lent is a chance to regain and deepen the realization that Catholics are “as the world judges, a little weird.” S.C.; Archbishop Philip Hannan of New Orleans; Archbishop Patrick Flores of San Antonio, Texas; Bishop Thomas O'Brien of Phoenix, Ariz.; Archbishop Roger Mahony of Los Angeles; Bishop Thaddeus Shubsda of Monterey, Calif.; Archbishop John Quinn of San Francisco; and Archbishop Edmund Szoka of Detroit. Also in the delegation are Archbishop Thomas Kelly of Louisville, Ky., chair man of the bishops' preparatory committee for the papal visit; Bishop William Keeler of Har risburg, Pa., chairman of the Bishops' Committee for Catholics “Christ's kingdom is not here, and hence, if we belong to that kingdom, we should not expect to be en tirely at home.” Formerly a judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Scalia, 51, was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Reagan and con firmed by the Senate Sept. 17. The other Catholic member of the court is Justice William Brennan. Scalia Favors "Displays" That Distinguish Ecumenical and Inter- religious Affairs; Msgr. Daniel Hoye, NCCB general secretary; and Father Robert Lynch, NCCB associate general secretary and coordinator of the papal trip. At the Vatican, spokes man Joaquin Navarro- Valls said the meeting would be in connection with the papal visit. “Every time the pope goes to a country, he meets with church leaders. A few weeks ago, it was Poland’s turn, ’' he said. Seven Polish church leaders met with the pope and Vatican officials recently to prepare for a papal trip to Poland in June.
