PAGE 12 - The Georgia Bulletin. April 16, 1987 Avoid Violence, Kidnappings, Pope Urges Argentine Youth A PAPAL FIRST — Pope John Paul II holds palm leaves as he arrives in downtown Buenos Aires to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass. It was the first time in modern church history that a pope celebrated Palm Sunday outside the Vatican. (NC photo from UPI-Reuter) Message In Argentina BY AGOSTINO BONO BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (NC) — Argentina must avoid returning to the wholesale political violence and kid nappings of the recent past, Pope John Paul II told a youth rally. This year marked the first time the pope celebrated the youth day outside the Vatican. It also marked the first time in modern church history that a pope celebrated Palm Sun day outside the Vatican. “May you never again have ... kidnapped or disappeared persons," said the pope. “May you no longer have a place for hate and violence, and may the dignity of the person always be respected,” he added. Youths were asked to make “personal commitments” to build “a nation of brothers.” “I know that you are determined to overcome the recent painful experiences of your country,” the pope said April 11. The speech was the first in the pope’s April 6-12 Argentine visit in which he referred to the large number, at least 9,000, of people who disappeared in Argentina during the 1970s and the early 1980s in the “dirty war” between security forces and guerrillas. Business Profits Should Help Society BY AGOSTINO BONO BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (NC) — Business leaders must look beyond the profit motive to helping rebuild Argentina’s ailing economy. Pope John Paul II told them at a meeting April 11 “Profit does not have as the only objective the increase of capital,” he said. “It also must be destined, with a social meaning, to im prove salaries, social services, technical training” and culture, the pope said. He urged them to increase "productive investments to create jobs, increase worker participation in the running of The Piano Tuning Company featuring “Total Piano Carol" Tuning — Repairs Rebuilding Refinishing ’Over 30 yrs. exp.* P.C. The pope criticized “the insatiable thirst for riches, easy and immoral profit, stealing, the temptation of power and pleasure.” He also criticized “the lack of honesty in business affairs and injustices toward your workers.” Argentina has had a 23.9 percent rise in its cost of living for the first three months of 1987. World prices are low for its meat and agricultural exports, and the government has said it cannot meet interest payments on its $50 billion foreign debt. “Times of crisis offer a challenge which is not only economic but also ethical” which requires "overcoming personal, group and national selfishness," said the pope. In the morning, the pope flew 125 miles west to Rosario for an outdoor Mass on the banks of the Parana River. Dur ing the homily he asked the laity to take action against “the spread of secularism" in society. “Assume your specific and irreplaceable apostolate” to evangelize temporal life, the pope said. “You are becoming aware, through very clear signs, of the increasing hunger for God being felt in the guts of modern man, especially the younger generation," said the pope. Since the military government was replaced by an elected civilian government in 1983, numerous high-ranking military officers, including three ex-presidents, have been convicted of human rights crimes. Many unmarked mass graves have been discovered — believed to be places where security forces buried suspected subversives they had kill ed. The pope, however, did not take a stand on a controver sial law which set a March deadline on filing charges against military and police officials involved in that era. The law has been criticized by human rights groups as a de facto amnesty because it did not give them enough time to gather evidence in many cases. The pope did not meet human rights groups in Argentina, but several speeches contained calls for respect of human rights. In an April 6 talk to government and political leaders he said governments are responsible for promoting and protecting human rights. Church organizers cited a lack of time as the reason for not scheduling a meeting with human rights leaders. The government has defended the deadline law, saying that the country no longer can live in the past and must move forward to solve new problems. The pope spoke at a night outdoor youth rally in Buenos Aires attended by about 400,000, mostly Argentines. The rally was held on the eve of World Youth Day, which the church began celebrating on Palm Sunday in 1985. Youth delegations also attended from other Latin American coun tries, Europe and Africa. The crowd, although enthusiastic and often interrupting the pope’s talk with applause and cheers, was well below the 1 million that church organizers had said they hoped would attend. The pope criticized “a humanity without the Father and because of this without love, orphaned and disoriented, capable of continuing to kill people who are no longer con sidered brothers.” “Thus is prepared its own self-destruction and annihila tion,” the pope said. Youths must also be “free from so many slaveries such as sexual disorders, drugs, violence and the desire for power,” the pope said. Many youths began arriving for the rally the night before, sleeping on the 400-foot-wide grassy area where the rally was held. Most came from outside Buenos Aires with knap sacks stuffed with clothes and plastic bags filled with packaged foods. The following day, April 12, the pope celebrated an out door Palm Sunday Mass for youths at the rally site. In the homily, the pope said that Holy Week was a reminder that Christ underwent "interrogations and tor tures.” The pope also warned the youths not to let fade the en thusiasm they showed at the rally and the Mass. "Enthusiasm lasts a short time. It can be over in one day.” he said. One reason for choosing Palm Sunday as World Youth Day was to emphasize the need for permanent enthusiasm and commitment by Christians, he said. “Palm Sunday introduces us to all the events of Holy Week and the total mystery of Jesus Christ. It introduces us to his giving until death on the cross because of obedience to the Father,” the pope said. PaineWebber Brian M.
