The four are Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of Chicago and Archbishops John Quinn of San Francisco, Daniel Pilarc- zyk of Cincinnati and Rembert Weakland of Milwaukee. They will be introduced by Archbishop John May of St. Louis, president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Msgr. Daniel Hoye, NCCB general secretary, confirmed the names of the four April 9 in response to an inquiry by Space For Campers In Columbia, S.C. COLUMBIA, S.C. (NC) — Tent and recreational vehicle campers can reserve special facilities near the airport when Pope John Paul II visits Columbia Sept. 11. Columbia Metropolitan Airport officials announced plans to open a temporary campground Sept. 9-12 for people who want to visit the airport for the pope’s ar rival and departure. Water will be available at all sites and electricity at the recreational vehicle sites. The airport will prob ably provide shuttle service between the camp ground and the airport, she said. Pope John Paul is expected to arrive in Columbia from Miami on the afternoon of Sept. 11, meet with leaders of other Christian churches, lead an ecumenical prayer service at the University of South Carolina stadium, and leave that evening for New Orleans. The camping area is to open at 10 a.m. Sept. 9 and close at noon Sept. 12. Tent sites are $5 a night and recreational vehicle sites are $10 a night. Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Archbishop John Quinn Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk Archbishop Rembert Weakland National Catholic News Service. He said Cardinal Bernardin is to speak about the relation ship between the universal church and the particular, or local churches. Archbishop Quinn is to talk about effective moral teaching by the church, he said. Archbishop Weakland’s topic, he added, is the role of the laity in society and in the church, including an emphasis on the role of women. Vocations will be Archbishop Pilarczyk’s topic, he said. Pope John Paul II is scheduled to make his second major visit to the United States Sept. 10-19. On Sept. 16 he is to meet with the assembled U.S. bishops in Los Angeles. Msgr. Hoye said the plan for four bishops to address the pope during the meeting is patterned after procedures followed by other bishops’ conferences in other countries the pope has visited. He said the four speakers and themes were chosen by the bishops’ committee for the papal visit, headed by Arch bishop Thomas Kelly of Louisville, Ky.. after the com mittee asked all the bishops in the country to suggest topics and speakers. The committee’s recommendations in turn were approved by the NCCB Administrative Committee in March, he said. Cardinal Bernardin and Archbishop Quinn are former presidents of the NCCB, and Archbishop Pilarczyk is the conference’s current vice president. Cardinal Bernardin and Archbishop Weakland chaired the writing committees that produced the U.S. bishops’ two major social pastoral letters of the ’980s, on peace and on the economy.
