PAGE 2 — The Georgia Bulletin, May 21, 1987 Pope's Ecumenical S.C. Meetings Could Have Impact On Catholics BY JULIE SLY KANSAS CITY, Mo. ( NC) — Ecumenical events plan ned when Pope John Paul II visits Columbia, S.C., could have a great impact on U.S. Catholics and promote awareness of ecumenical challenges facing Chris tians, according to Bishop William H. Keeler of Har risburg, Pa. Bishop Keeler, chairman of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops' Com mittee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, ad dressed the biannual meeting of the Governing Board of the National Coun cil of Churches in Kansas City. He discussed cooper ative ecumenical efforts for the Sept. 10-19 papal trip. The pope's visit to Colum bia Sept. 11 will focus on ecumenical relations be tween the Catholic Church and other Christian chur ches. Recent meetings with Christian leaders have in dicated that “one public major ecumenical event in volving the pope is worth 15 years of effort by church leaders and scholars in terms of its impact on Roman Catholic laity, the people in the pews,” Bishop Keeler told the board. Bishop Keeler In Columbia, people "will see the pope in a situation in which he comes as a brother, among his sisters and brothers, in an area in which the percentage of Catholics is extremely low, " the bishop said. “It will be a situation in which the pope will both listen and speak, and we pray that it will be helpful to the cause of greater understanding arid unity among Chris tians.” Bishop Keeler said he has been working for several months with a committee of U.S. religious leaders to plan three ecumenical events which will take place in Columbia. In an interview with The Catholic Key, newspaper of the Diocese of Kansas Citv- St. Joseph, Mo., he added that papal trip preparations have had "a catalytic ef fect” on interchurch rela tions. “Every time we come together, pray and discuss, recognizing certain things that bind us, some new bonds of trust and friend ship are established,” he said. He also said that the Na tional Council of Churches was ‘ ‘ breaking ground’ ’ in a statement, released to the Governing Board, regard ing the papal visit. The statement, titled "Witnessing Together to a Divided and Hurting World,” was signed by leaders of 29 different Christian denominations and 175 local and regional ecumenical agencies. The National Council of Chur ches is comprised of 32 mainline Protestant, Or thodox and Anglican na tional church units, representing 42 million members. The National Council of Churches statement says that “although we are aware of our different ap proaches to many difficult problems, nevertheless all Christians seek to be faithf ul to our common con fession of Jesus Christ and the Gospel, even when deeply held convictions lead us at times to different ethical choices" “Differences in our socie ty are often reflected in our churches,” the statement continues. "Some of these tensions will likely surface during this papal visit. We do not deny these tensions or our relationship with those who voice them, lest we distance ourselves from the reconciling challenge made plain to us in the Gospel" A Catholic response, released at the Kansas City meeting and signed by Archbishop John L. May of St. Louis, NCCB president, and Msgr. Daniel F. Hoye, NCCB general secretary, praised those who signed the statement for “their goodness in lifting up these sentiments of common faith and vision.” “With them we pray that the forthcoming visit of Pope John Paul II will fur ther focus our hopes and sharpen our sense of the ecumenical opportunities before the people of our country" Archbishop May and Msgr. Hoye stated. While the Catholic Church is not a member of the Na tional Council of Churches, Catholics participate in many of the agency' s ministries for mission, education and social witness. The National Coun cil of Churches "is certainly looking for more ways of more visible collaboration" with the Catholic Church in the United States, Bishop Keeler said. Moving? Through the 1990-1991 school year parents living in the attendance district for the regional school will be able to send their children to the Catholic school of their choice and their parishes will pay a subsidy for their children if the parents are active parish members. The change is primarily designed to assist Im maculate Heart of Mary and St. Thomas More schools, said Sister Roberta Schmidt, C.S.J., secretary for education. "It would be difficult if (these schools) suffered a sharp decline in enroll ment because of the regional school," she said. She also noted that attendance policy at the regional school was never intended to affect the completion of school years for students already enrolled at IHM, St. Thomas More or other existing schools, or to break up siblings in one family where an older child attends a particular school. The new policy says: St. John Neumann Regional School remains the designated school of enrollment for students in the regional attendance zone. However, for the school periods 1986 through 1991 families residing in parishes and counties constituting the regional atten dance zone for St. John Neumann Regional School may send their children to the Catholic school of their choice. These parishes shall pay subsidy for the children as long as their families maintain active membership status. Parishes and counties constituting the regional at tendance zones for St. John Neumann Regional School are the following: Prince of Peace Church. Buford Saint Pius X Church, Conyers Saint Lawrence Church, Lawrenceviile Saint John Neumann Church, Lilburn Christ Our Hope Church, Lithonia Saint Patrick’s Church, Norcross Saint Oliver Plunkett Church, Snellville Corpus Christi Church, Stone Mountain Parishes, Barrow County Parishes, Walton County * Brunetti & Mazzetta, P.C.
