I MONSIGNOR DON KIERNAN HONORED — Governor Joe Frank Harris presented the “L. Howard Atherton Award” to Mon signor Kiernan recently. The award is presented an nually to the person who exemplified the qualities of determination, dedication, integrity and \ision that characterized the life of Howard 'Red” Atherton, the first Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. The award honors the commit ment of the recipient to the betterment of local govern ment in Georgia. I June 8-11 At IHM Charismatic Renewal Week Set Father Stephen Barham, a Melkite Rite priest of the Diocese of Fresno, Calif., will conduct a charismatic renewal week. June 8 to 11 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 2855 Briar- cliff Road. N.E.. Atlanta. The services will begin at 7:30 p.m. each evening and will include teaching by Father Barham and a time of prayer and praise. Wednesday night Father Barham will celebrate a healing Mass at 7:30. Father Barham, himself, was healed of cancer in 1980. Since then he has been involved in the healing ministry. At the present time he hosts a program for the Fresno diocesan television station and is working with the diocese's charismatic activities. He was invited to conduct the renewal week by Father Michael Panter. who is the archdiocesan liaison for Riverdale Students Win Scholarships Two eighth grade graduates from St. John the Evangelist School in Hapeville are the winners of the 1987-88 Arch diocesan Scholarships for Academic Excellence. Jeannette Clera Polkinghorne. daughter of Norma and Bob Polkinghorne. of Riverdale. and Terence John Garten, son of Priscilla and Robert Garten of Riverdale. will receive $350 each. The scholarships, renewable for the sophomore year, based on academic record, are given eighth grade graduates from Catholic grammar schools who plan to attend St. Pius X High School. A karate enthusiast. Jeannette has a red belt with three black stripes in the sport, which is one step from having a black belt. She participates in regional and national tour naments, the last of which was in Little Rock, Ark. "T.J.". as he is called by his family, is the third son to at tend St. Pius. He is an avid soccer player and an active Boy Scout who recently attained the Star rank and is working toward being an Eagle Scout. Farewell For Friars To honor the Fran ciscan Friars, who have staffed the Shrine of the Im maculate Conception in Atlanta since 1958, a covered-dish din ner and tribute will be held after the 11 a.m. Mass on Sun day, June 7. Friends of the Friars and former parishioners are in vited to join them as they concelebrate Mass on this last Sun day marking the end of their service at the Shrine. A program of tri bute is being planned by the men of the parish to take place during the dinner which will begin at 12:30. The parish will furnish bread and drinks for the meal. Late Poet Honored By Carrollton Group The late Laurraine Goreau was honored by a program featuring her poetry and music at the Altar Society Ap preciation Dinner. May 16, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Carrollton. A selection of poems from Miss Goreau's posthumously published book. "Laser Light and Nectar,” was read by the author's sister. Mrs. Mary Anne DeVillier. In addition, recordings of several songs composed by Miss Goreau were played. Miss Goreau is best known for her biography of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, "Just Mahalia, Baby.” She was also a newspaper writer and editor, a composer, playwright, magazine writer, actress, director, and lec turer. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and of the Altar Society for several years before her death in 1985. Prior to the appreciation dinner, new' officers for the Altar Society were installed at a special Mass. The new of ficers are Dianne Harper, president; Cathy Whitener, vice- president: Karen McRitchie. treasurer; and Dot Hill (with assistance of Debbie Ginther). secretary. In dian editor and grandson oi Mahatma Gandhi, Alec smith, a Zimbabwe Army chaplain, whose father is Ian Smith, the former Rhodesian Prime Minister, and Ana Maria Xuya Cuxil, the first Indian woman to be elected to the Guatemalan Congress, are among the hundreds of par ticipants expected to take part in a Moral Re-Armament conference at Emory University, June 4 to 7. Mayor Andrew Young will welcome the delegates at the opening banquet with Philadelphia minister Rev. Leon Sullivan, author of the "Sullivan Principles." the code of practice for American business in South Africa. Themes which the conference delegates will address are "The role of forgiveness in international affairs” and "As I am, so is my nation.” Conference organizers, w'ho include Conrad Hunte, an in ternational sportsman from the West Indies, and his wife Patricia Hunte, anchor-woman on WXIA TV, say that to bring this world safely into the21st century "great qualities of care, creativity, wisdom and dedication will be needed." The purpose of the conference is to "explore how, as in dividual Americans, we can live more effective lives and, as a nation, work in partnership with other nations to con front this challenge to our world.” The concept of Moral Re-Armament has mobilized people for 50 years around the simple idea that change in the world starts with each one. that absolute honesty, purity, unselfishness and love are indispensable criteria for in dividual and national actions and that God s clear direction is available to all who take time to seek it. A theater play, "Skeletons. " by Hugh Steadman Williams, will be produced in connection with the con ference. It will be staged at Emory University Law School's Tull auditorium on Sat., June 6.
