His wife, Faustine, began praying that he would be able to join the new group, which met in the evening at the north west Atlanta church. Ben pledged he would join if her prayers and those of Brother Mi chael, then at the pa rish, led to his being shifted to day work at Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta. M SO Benjamin Petty Four weeks after the two began to pray for this change, his supervisor came to him and asked him if he would like to change from night to day shift. It was God calling him. Deacon Petty said. In the years since, God has led him to be more loving, has shaped and molded his family, he said. He and his wife have a son, Gerard, 19. Now he wants to work among the 3,000 tenants at Bankhead Courts, a low-income housing area within the parish boundaries. “I want to make them feel God’s presence. I hope I can evangelize them, they are in desperate need of spiritual help." Deacon Petty worked with them earlier, but because of the heavy pressure of his diaconate studies, was not able to do as much there as he wanted to. Now he intends to make Bankhead Courts one of his chief ministries. He is grateful for the spiritual direction he has received from his pastor, Father Thomas Brislin, C.P., during the past three years. Of his diaconate studies, he said they were harder than his studies for his degree in biology received from Morris Brown in Atlanta. His first two years of college were at the University of Michigan. He also leads a monthly chapel service at Southwest Community. He is a Eucharistic minister and brings Communion to the sick, is a lector, and has been co-chairman of the successful parish Charities Drive for two years. Mrs. Petty received a certificate and was among the wives who studied homiletics. -RMcI
