Catholic, Jewish Officials Meet In N.Y. With Vatican Prelate PAGE 13 — The Georgia Bulletin, July 16,1987 BY LIZ SCHEVTCHUK WASHINGTON (NC) - American Jewish and Catholic officials met in New York City with Car dinal Agostino Casaroli, Vatican secretary of state, July 9 following interfaith tensions sparked by Austrian President Kurt Waldheim’s June 25 visit to Pope John Paul II. The Catholic-Jewish meeting, preceded by a Ju ly 8 meeting between Car dinal Casaroli and top U.S. Catholic officials, was an nounced by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington July 10 following inquiries from National Catholic News Service and other news media. According to Archbishop John L. May of St. Louis, NCCB president, the car dinal and the Jewish delegation held a “serious, cordial" talk that was "reflective of mutual trust and concern.” “Since the meeting was informal in nature, it would not be appropriate to report on its content in any detail,” the archbishop said. Jewish leaders have been seeking a “substantive" meeting with the pope, and one high-level Jewish source, who asked not to be identified, said the “substantive" meeting is still needed. “It certainly wasn’t the UPHOLSTERY REFINISHING & MADE TO ORDER CUSHIONS 28 Years Experience Satisfaction Guaranteed Call 344-2201 Den Juans SPANISH CASTILUAN A CONTINENTAL CUISINE SPECIAL FIVE COURSE SPANISH FEAST FOR ONLY $12.95 appetizer (5 choices) soups (4 choices) salad (2 choices) entree (10 choices of beef, veal, fish & paella) dessert (3 choices) $12** regular menu also available Enjoy our Classical Flamingo Guitarist 1927 Piedmont Circle, Atlanta open 7 days for reservations : 874-4285 one that took place this week,' the source said. “That was an exploratory session Archbishop May did not attend the July 9 meeting between the cardinal and Jewish leaders, although he did attend the July 8 meeting between the car dinal and U.S. Catholic of ficials. The cardinal and Jewish leaders conferred at the residence of Archbishop Renato Martino, perma nent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations. One of the participants, Rabbi Marc T. Tanen- baum, international affairs director of the American Jewish Committee, charac terized it as “a useful meet ing, one that the Jewish re presentatives see as the be ginning of a process of ne cessary clarification be tween the Holy See and the world Jewish community.” In an interview with NC News July 10 Rabbi Tanen- baum said the discussion was “off the record" and that "I think all of us are duty-bound not to comment on the specific content.” “We look forward to a series of follow-up steps that we discussed with Car dinal Casaroli in order to help clarify the deep misunderstandings which emerged as a result of the meeting that Kurt Wald heim requested and held with the pope,” he said. "We urged him, if his schedule permitted, to meet informally with some leaders of the Jewish com munity " Msgr. Hoye told NC News that "the cardinal readily agreed to doing that ” Cardinal Casaroli was already in New York for a series of unofficial func tions The pope's meeting with Waldheim, who has denied accusations linking him to Nazi war crimes, prompted strong criticism of the Vatican from Jewish quarters and warnings that Jewish groups might pull out of a scheduled meeting with the pontiff in Miami Sept. 11. At the Miami meeting the pope and a Jewish repre sentative are scheduled to read their respective prepared statements, but no back-and-forth dialogue is planned. (NC Photo by Liz Schevtchuk) $5 Million Sought For Miami's Poor MIAMI (NC) — Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy of Miami is encouraging contributions of some $5 million to local charities to offset allegations that Pope John Paul II’s visit will consume money which would otherwise be spent on the poor. “If we can get a million people to respond at an average of $5 apiece, there will be $5 million going to our poor. So there won’t be that complaint that this is somehow depriv ing the poor," he said in an interview in May in The Miami News daily paper. The archbishop said he will urge everyone who sees the pope during his Sept. 10-11 stay in Miami or who are in fluenced by the visit to contribute money to a favorite chari ty for the poor. He said he will not seek money for Catholic Charities itself but is recommending other contributions that will go “directly to the poor or any agency that helps the poor. So in this area it would go to agencies like the Salvation Army, the United Way, or any agency that they feel confident is serving the poor.” To help pay for the papal trip, area corporations by mid- May had pledged a total of about $500,000, in amounts vary ing from $10,000 to $25,000. Donations also were expected from Florida’s six other dioceses and from private founda tions, according to the archbishop. A Marian Year Tribute To The Mother Of God Star of the Sea Isaias in the Hebrew tongue means “Jesus is the Lord.” He prophesied the Virgin Birth seven hundred years before. The Holy Mother of the Son did come from Galilee, and she was blessed as Miriam, “Star of the Sea.” The Angel Gabriel did proclaim that she was “full of grace;” That God had honored her above all in the human race. Her Salutation brought about the Baptist’s leap for joy and Elizabeth knew from Love Divine about her Christ Child Boy. Judea welcomed Miriam, but with a cold, damp cave; Yet Jesus came forth to all men prepared to die and save. Old Simeon, in the Temple long, did speak of Christ’s true sign, and he foretold the sorrow that Our Lady’s Soul would find. The years did pass and Jesus waxed in wisdom and in age, and Miriam lost him on a journey where he awed the sage, In Galilee, where Cana sits, his Mother made a plea, and Jesus in his first great act revealed his majesty. Poor Miriam stood beneath the Cross that blackened, earthshook day. Perhaps she reminisced the words that Simeon had to say. Then Jesus looked upon her and told her to “behold,” and grief did tear asunder her Immaculate Soul. Holy Scripture points clearly to the Blessed Mother’s role; That in Salvation she can be a beacon to each soul. For Christ by his first miracle, before his time had come, granted to his humble “Star” the plea made to her Son.
