He said Mass at tendance has increased 60 percent in the same period. The new church will seat 400 people. Marian Year Pilgrims To Visit Three Churches A pilgrimage to three churches is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 22, the Feast of the Queenship of Mary. This special archdiocesan day of prayer is another event marking the Marian Year in which Pope John Paul II has asked for special prayers to Mary, the Mother of God. The pilgrimage will start at 10 a.m. with a visit to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church at 2855 Briarcliff Road NE., Atlan ta. Everyone attending is asked to gather in the parking lot at 9:45 and process into the church. Mass will be celebrated at 8:45 a.m. Carpools will be formed at IHM for motor processions to the Shrine of the Im maculate Conception, 48 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW, Atlanta, and to Sacred Heart Church, 1323 MacArthur Drive, Griffin. Pilgrims will process into each church where five decades of the rosary will be said. At IHM, the statue of Mary, Queen of Heaven, will be crowned with appropriate hymns and prayers; consecration of those present to the Holy Mother of God will take place at the Shrine of the Immaculate Con ception, and benediction of the Most Bless ed Sacrament will be celebrated at Sacred Heart in Griffin. The pilgrimage is expected to reach the shrine in downtown Atlanta at about 11:30 a.m. and the church in Griffin at 2 p.m. There will be a one-hour break for lunch before the visitation in Griffin. • •••• Along with the special archdiocesan pilgrimage, Marian Year events continue at parishes. A novena to the Blessed Mother will begin Thursday, Aug. 6 with Mass at 9 a.m. at St. Ann Church in Mariet ta. The novena will conclude Saturday, Aug. 15, the Feast of the Assumption. After 9 a.m. Mass on the holy day a bus trip will be made to St. Joseph Maronite Church in Atlanta and the Epiphany Byzantine Catholic Church in Alpharetta. The focus of the visits will be on the traditions of these churches concerning the Blessed Virgin Mary. Anyone interested in taking part is asked to call Father Brian Sheridan at 998-1374. A special Marian Year celebration will also be held Saturday, Aug. 15 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 1406 Hearst Drive NE, Atlanta, with a concelebrated Mass at 5:30 p.m A reception will follow the Mass honoring the patroness of the parish. The public is invited to honor Mary at the Mass and to share in the feast. Gathering Scheduled For Aug. 19 The annual Gathering sponsored by the Religious Educa tion department of the archdiocese has been scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 19 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Grist Mill pavilion, Stone Mountain Park. The Gathering is held to give parish religious education directors, coordinators and youth ministers an opportunity to share what is happening in their parishes. Featured presenter will be Eleanor Brownell, D.Min., in ternational catechetical consultant for William Sadlier publishing house.
