PAGE 3 — The Georgia Bulletin, October 8,1987 Christ The King School To Study World Hunger BY KAREN RAMSDEN Faculty, staff and stu dents of Christ the King School, Atlanta, through the coordination of second grade teacher Carol Fox, will explore aspects of world hunger during World Hunger Week, October 11 through 16. A prayer service in the Hyland Gymnasium at 8:15 a.m., Monday, Oct. 12 will initiate the week. At that time, classes will share their intentions for the week and year — how they plan to study and follow the plight of the hungry, how and what they plan to do about hunger. Right To Life Group Holds State Conference Georgia Right To Life will hold its state conference Saturday, October 17 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Christian ■ Academy in northwest Atlanta. The con- ference theme, “Equipping for Life ’87,” will focus on the practical applications of ideas studied by the group. Keynote speaker ; at the luncheon will be Penny Lea, director of “I Believe in Life” ministry of Pensacola, ' ; FI. Persons interested in attending the con- ference should make reservations by calling 454-7612. Special Day Planned For Ministers To Handicapped A “Faith and Sharing Day” for persons involved in ministry to the handicap ped will be held Sunday, October 18 at St. Jude’s Church, 7171 Glenridge Drive in Sandy Springs. A special liturgy will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. followed by a covered dish supper in the cafeteria. Reservations are needed for the supper. For more information and to make reservations, call Toni Miralles at 394-4588. All are welcome to join the celebration and to share in the apostolate. In activities outside of school, individual classes may choose to assist soup kitchens, night shelters or other projects for the homeless. Many students will have already par ticipated in the metro Atlanta Hunger Walk Oct. 4. In school, for one day, plain soup will replace the usual lunches. Soup lunch for students and faculty will be on Thursday, Oct. 15. Donations collected will go to a soup kitchen or night shelter. Eighth graders will be given the opportunity to write to Georgia senators. Eighth graders also will share facts about hunger over the school intercom each morn ing. All week there will be an exchange of ideas and participation in activities and lessons that will center on global hunger. On Oct. 16 at 9 a.m., a closing Mass will be celebrated. Ms. Fox says, “I believe we have a tremendous op portunity to work with our children in helping them to discuss the life of virtue, and better, yet, to find the ways and means to express it. We want our children at a young age to learn what it means to live a life of Christian service to other people, to reach beyond themselves and their im mediate horizons to touch the horizons of others. Monsignor John F. McDonough, archdiocesan administrator, will cele brate the Mass. Rev. Viktoras Dabusis of St. Petersburg, FI. will give the homily. Sister Igne of the Immaculate Concep tion Sisters, Putnam, Conn. and Rev. Dabusis will give a presentation on the jubilee. The anniversary has received recent attention from Pope John Paul who was barred by Soviet authorities from visiting Lithuania for the celebra tion earlier this year. In an apostolic letter the pope urged the youth of Soviet Lithuania to “joyfully and trustfully” assume their Roman Catholic heritage. The Holy Father beatified Archbishop Jurgis Matul- aitis, a native Lithuanian who was trained and taught in Polish seminaries, at a June 28 Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. Catholics of the archdio cese are invited to par ticipate in this celebration of Lithuanian’s conversion to Christianity and demonstrate their solidari ty with those who struggle today in that Baltic Sea country for human rights and religious freedom.
