PAGE 12 — The Georgia Bulletin, October 22, 1987 Messages Of Condolence, Words Of Regard From ATLANTA'S MAYOR: I was saddened to learn today of the death of Archbishop Donnellan. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of sorrow and grief. In his service to this city and to its Catholic population of the past 19 years the archbishop showed a true dedication to serving the least of these God’s children. His contributions to expanding the Catholic population of the archdiocese and to the building and shap ing of this city are immeasurable. May you find comfort in the memories of such a devoted servant and support from your friends and family. Sincerely, Mayor Andrew Young From THE EXTENSION SOCIETY: Archbishop Donnellan’s love of the American home mis sion was the greatest proof for me personally that he was a real churchman. He simply loved the Church. In private conversation and at board meetings, it became clear that his concern was always focused on what would make the Church stronger. We at Extension Society will miss him. I’m grateful to God for so many years of his priestly exam ple. Everyone in Extension sends sympathy to the priests and people of the archdiocese of Atlanta. Father Edward J. Slattery President Catholic Church Extension Society From A CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER: Bishop Donnellan was a friend. He had a great sensitivity for social justice. He believed in applying the moral im perative to the issues of human rights. He was a friend. Rev. Joseph Lowery Southern Christian Leadership Conference From A CLASSMATE: We were ordained the same day and all through the years we have kept in contact, sometimes spending a weekend together when he would come to Washington. He was one of the most personable, intelligent and spiritual of men. He was a true leader and he will be missed — most of all, by his classmates. , „ Archbishop Joseph Ryan Military Archdiocese Washington, D.C. From A BLACK MINISTER: fr ■ I found him to be a warm, sensitive and committed pro phetic witness, who dared to express his faith in words and deeds which reflected the example of Christ. From A BRONX NATIVE: I was a first philosophy student and he was Deacon of the House at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, N.Y. We both came from the Bronx and he was like a father to me. I knew his father and his mother. I went to his installation as bishop (of Ogdensburg, N.Y.) and here to his installation as archbishop. He was always very mature when it came to responsibility. He had an excellent Irish wit — strong Irish roots that gave him a deep love of the Church. He was always sensitive about the younger priests — conscious of the concerns of younger priests and he was always a gentleman. Bishop Edward Head Buffalo, N.Y. From THE GREEK ORTHODOX COMMUNITY: Our Cathedral family joins in extending to our Roman Catholic brethren our sincere profound condolences on the passing of your archbishop and spiritual father. We share in your loss. We treasure the memories of our long association with Archbishop Donnellan and assure you of our prayers for the repose of his gentle soul. Father Homer P.
