PAGE 11 — The Georgia Bulletin, November 26, 198 Book Week Celebrated St. Thomas More School, Decatur, held its annual Book Week festivities Nov. 16 through 20, with ac tivities encouraging read ing. The school librarian, Mary Lou Swenson, coor dinated the event. Students participated in an art contest to promote their favorite book or reading as a hobby, with the first, second and third place winners in each grade receiving prizes. They dressed as a favorite character from a book for Wednesday’s Book Char acter Day. Wednesday evening the school held an open house and book sale. The art con test creations were on display, and students had the opportunity to become a “Library Angel” by donating a book to the school collection. A book sale was held to encourage the students’ reading habits, with the profits to be used to add new books to the school library. Highlight of the evening was a musical salute to the DECISIONS — Nikki Rachel tries to decide on a book with the help of her mother Wanda at the St. Thomas More book sale. T-Shirt Contest Held At OLA A T-shirt slogan contest was among ac tivities celebrating National Book Week, Nov. 16-22, at Our Lady of the Assumption School, Atlanta. The students also enjoyed selecting a prize from the prize bowl when they visited the library. Prizes included books, bookmarks and T-shirts. Educational games and puzzles were available at a table in the library for students. Mrs. Nancy Coakley, librarian, organiz ed and directed the week’s activities which drew participation from all the children from kindergarten to the eighth grade. Mrs. Mary Baxter’s fifth grade class at OLA decorated a bulletin board for the month of November as part of their studies for All Saints Day. Taking the theme, “Urgently Needed: Saints,” they devel oped ad layouts and copy. Georgia Art Bus Makes Visit To IHM School The Home and School Association of Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Atlanta, sponsored the Georgia Art Bus Exhibit at the school last month. The exhibit, a program of the Georgia Council of the Arts, travels around the state in a large, colorful bus bring ing work by Georgia artists to the schools. Gena Spivey, who is represented in the exhibit, was artist in residence for three days during the exhibit. She held workshops and demonstrations for the , ' “Fostering Faith Growth Through Prayer and Worship” will be the theme of the Professional Ministry Certification weekend scheduled Dec. 4, 5, 6, at the Catholic Center. The objectives of the weekend are to help participants describe the characteristics of spirituality and the prin ciples fostering spiritual growth, design retreat ex periences, describe key elements of worship and utilize pro cesses for planning worship experiences, and utilize ap proaches and techniques for fostering prayer life. The presenter of the weekend will be Sister Katherine Doyle, S.M., vocation coordinator for the Sisters of Mercy of Auburn and coordinator of youth catechesis for the Diocese of Sacramento. She holds an M.A. in educational administration and M.A. in liturgical studies. The weekend sponsored by the Office of Religious Educa tion in cooperation with the Center for Youth Ministry Development will begin on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and con clude on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Eucharistic liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday evening and participants are astced to participate in the pot luck dinner on Saturday. The cost of the weekend is $125 for certificate students and $75 for auditors. There is an additional book fee of $24.80. For more information, contact Bob Melevin, 888-7835 State Hospital Patients Are Feted The Fall Fiesta spon sored by the Northwest Deanery of the Atlanta Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women was at tended by approximately 450 patients at Central State Hospital in Milledge- ville. Twenty-six hostesses from all the deaneries in the AACCW attended in cluding Ruby Hallis, com munity affairs chairper son, and her three sisters; and Lithangia Robinson, northwest deanery presi dent. Gifts were distributed and refreshments served. Parishes represented were; Holy Family, St. Paul of the Cross, All Saints, Holy Cross, Im maculate Heart of Mary, St. Andrews, St. James Mission and Sacred Heart in Milledgeville. The parties a t the hospital were begun in the late 1960s by Mrs.- Eleanor O’Connor, AACCW member from Im maculate Heart of Mary Church. The women take the parties to the patients three times a year and pro vide funds to buy gifts and refreshments for the annual Christmas party at the hospital.
