McDonough - BY JOHN THAVIS VATICAN CITY (NC) - Pope John Paul II beatified 85 martyrs killed during 16th-and 17th-century persecution in England and said the church should re joice that religious hos tilities among Christians have ended. In other activities Nov. 21-22, the pope helped in augurate a new Armenian rite for the Divine Liturgy in a Rome church and, in a talk to a Vatican relief organization, defended the rights of refugees around the world The pope’s sermon dur ing the beatification Mass in St. Peter s Basilica Nov. 22 struck an ecumenical tone, echoing statements made by Catholic and Anglican leaders in Eng land the week before the ceremony. Declared “blessed" were Father George Haydock, an Englishman executed as a traitor in 1584, and 84 others from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. They were killed after England broke with the Roman Catholic Church to es tablish the Church of Eng land. Beatification is one of the final steps before saint hood. “These martyrs gave their lives for their loyalty to the authority of the suc cessor of Peter, who alone is pastor of the whole flock,” the pope said. That same kind of loyalty is demonstrated today, he said, by people who work for renewal of the church, particularly in the area of Christian unity. . “We must all rejoice that the hostilities between Christians, which so shaped the age of these martyrs, are over, replaced by fraternal love and mutual esteem,” he said. A Vatican decree said the martyrs were killed Prison (Continued from page 1) In an interview Tuesday, Sister Pilar, a Cuban herself, said she could understand the frustration and fear of detainees fear ing they would be returned to Cuba. “This news was like a big blow” to the de tainees, she said. “They can’t expect anything from Castro.” In Cuba, she said, they have “no freedom, no hope, no future. Among the group were 22 lay men, including a printer, a bartender and stableman and a tailor. The pope praised the “courage and joy” with which they went to their death. “Blessed Nicholas Post gate welcomed his execu tion as ‘a shortcut to hea ven.’ Blessed Joseph Lambton encouraged those who were to die with him with the words, 'Let us be merry, for tomorrow I hope we shall have a heavenly breakfast,”’ the pope noted in his sermon. The pope said that while no women were included in the group, many of them died and suffered for their faith, too. “They have earned our undying admiration and remembrance,” he said. More than 2,000 Catholics from dioceses in England and Wales were present at the ceremony, along with many bishops. The Ang lican Church also sent a representative. are fighting...for their freedom.” Outside the prison, the group congregated with some of the wives and children of detainees. Father Edd Salazar, S.J., of Ignatius House retreat center, suggested to one wife that perhaps the women and children would like to join the group in prayer. She readily agreed and went about through the group distributing prayer sheets the priest had brought with him. The sound of voices in prayer soon drew a pha lanx of television and newspaper reporters and cameramen, and the cu rious. Prayers in Spanish and English — from Isaiah, the Psalms, Jeremiah and Luke — and the Rosary were spoken. Candles illu minated the faces of the men, women and children asking God’s protection on both the detainees and their hostages. Singing of the hymn, “Alabare,” end ed the prayer vigil. During the prayers, forlorn children knelt beside their mothers. One young woman drew her small son closer to her as the toddler called out for “Daddy,” several times. A little boy sitting on a low wall observed the scene with sad eyes. She had been keeping vigil since shortly after the pri son takeover Monday morning. She vowed to re main there until she had some word of her husband, Dagobeeto Figueroa, who has spent five years in the prison. The prayer vigil, Sister Pilar said, seemed to calm the wives. Supported by prayer and the presence of faithful volunteers who had regularly visited their husbands in prison, they seemed to lose the ag gressive disposition they had shown earlier.
