The parish of Prince of Peace in Buford, made up of 175
families, celebrated the blessing of a new church structure
Sun., Nov. 22, anticipating that the sanctuary, seating 400,
will be replaced by an actual church in five years.
Father Edward O’Connor, dean of the region, celebrated
the church blessing, with pastor Father Richard Morrow
and Deacon Homer Woods also taking part in the Mass.
Other priests were also present for the ceremony.
The Buford community’s history began in 1974 when the
first Mass was celebrated at the home of Vic and Sue
Maloof. A first building was raised by Christmas 1975 on 10
acres of land donated by the Allen estate in memory of Leo
Lawler and his family.
The new church building was designed by architect Vic
Maloof. With the rapid growth taking place in Gwinnett
County, it is anticipated that a new church will be needed
soon and that the building blessed Nov. 22 will become a
hall for parish functions. The celebration included a half-
hour of music prior to the Blessing ceremony and Mass. A
parish feast on barbecue followed.
Over 400 people came to the Mass, according to Father
Morrow. Other priests who came included Father Terry
Kane, pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish, Father
Francis Pham Van Phuong, coordinator of the Vietnamese
apostolate for the archdiocese, and Father Lawrence R.
Schmuhl, S.M., parochial vicar at St. Joseph’s in Marietta.
Deacon Woods is from our Lady of Lourdes in Atlanta.
Father Edward O’Connor, pastor of St.
Theresa’s, Douglasville, and dean of the region,
Rev. Herbert Owens, pastor of the First
Methodist Church of Buford, brought greetings
and opened the day with a prayer.
John Williams performed the fanfare to
Folk music before the celebration began was and Steve Lax and Melissa and Melanie Fisher, signal the beginning of the celebration and
