PAGE 2 — The Georgia Bulletin, January 5, 1989 Catholic Editors Pick Top 1988 Religious News Stories BY JERRY FILTEAU WASHINGTON (NC) — The U.S. presidential election was the top 1988 religious news story, according to Catholic newspaper editors. They picked Pope John Paul II as the top religious newsmaker of the year. Traditionalist Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre came in sec ond among newsmakers. The schism he started in June when he illegally ordained four bishops was ranked second among the year’s major news events in religion. Forty-one editors responded to the yearly poll conducted by National Catholic News Service. Out of 30 events or issues listed as religious news stories of the year, the U.S. elections received 13 first-place votes and 280 points out of a possible 410. Candidates George Bush and Michael Dukakis both courted the Catholic vote. Consistency on life issues became an election issue as Democrat Dukakis backed legalized abortion but opposed capital punishment while Republican Bush opposed abortion but supported the death penalty.
