PAGE 2 — The Georgia Bulletin, January 26,1989 Making Economic Justice Real Smyrna Parish Gives Time, Labor To Housebound, Poor BY PAULA DAY Parishioners of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Smyrna have organized “Saturday Helpers” as part of their response to the U.S. bishops’ pastoral, Economic Justice For All. The parish Social Justice and Peace Committee has formed three teams of Saturday work crews to help the elderly and disabled with routine maintenance and yard work. The crews have been in operation since late fall. Earlier in 1988, the committee began its study of the pastoral, according to Larry Montieth, committee chair man. Father Leo Holleran, M.S., parochial vicar at St. Thomas at the time, was a resource person during their study. In their search for concrete ways to implement the pastoral, the group invited Cobb County organizations such as the Women’s Crisis Center which helps battered women, and Cobb Emergency Aid to speak to them. Montieth ad mits that while group members understood the bishops’ message, they found it very difficult to come to a decision on how the parish could implement it. He said the present project “is the best for the moment.” “We just take it step by step. We hope to get involved in larger projects — maybe with other churches. Our goals are wide open,” he said. Jesse Thrasher, a member of the parish who is retired, is contact person for the work crews. He discretely interviews persons who have been referred to the committee to find out their needs. He gives this information to the team leaders, Don Sabbarese, Robert Burke and Larry Montieth, who decide if they can be of any help. Locating those the crews can help is a challenge, Thrasher said. He believes people are hesitant to ask for help and may be waiting to see how the project progresses. Thus far the crews have helped clean debris from a yard and paint the interior of the home of a couple who have serious health problems. They have repaired a woman’s car and are trying to locate a hot water heater for a 71-year- old blind man who lives alone. The crews work two or three hours on Saturday morn ings, using their own equipment. Members come from a variety of professions and generally do not have specialized skills. The crews are looking for carpenters, plumbers and Director Of Development, Finance Named Joseph J. Estafen, direc tor of finance for the arch diocese, has been named to succeed the late John E. In their statement of purpose the committee says, “The (pastoral) letter questions how well our society has met the call of Our Lord to love one another as we love ourselves. Our committee sees its role as challenging our church com munity to live out the responsibility of these words and to make them come alive in our personal lives and in the life of our church community. We want to raise the level of con sciousness that this means personal involvement and in teraction with those in need. “Some at St. Thomas have already experienced this per sonal interaction through groups like St. Vincent de Paul and SHARE and others. However, the pastoral letter calls our church community to offer more opportunities for everyone,” the statement continues. “As we share more of ourselves with our brothers and sisters we then begin to realize the deeper meaning of Christian community.” Montieth added: “We felt after our study that the pastoral was calling everyone in the community to get in volved.” AACCW To Host Hospital Party Prizes, gifts and refreshments are needed by the committee planning the winter Have A Smile party for residents at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville.
