Birthright Offices Close Two north Georgia Birthright offices recently closed because of lack of com munity volunteers and funds. The Athens office, which had provided moral and material support for pregnant women for more than 12 years, closed September 1. The Lawrenceville office, open 14 months, closed at the end of July. Birthright, Inc., is a nonprofit organiza tion offering help and reasonable alter natives to abortion to any girl or woman distressed by an unplanned or untimely pregnancy. This help can include finding medical assistance, housing and clothes for the woman, as well as providing emo tional support during and after the pregnancy. For Birthright director Terry Weaver, the closings were a commentary on a com munity’s commitment to protecting and nourishing life during pregnancy. “People say they are interested in pro life, but don't want to put time into Birthright. Time is the most valuable thing we have. We at Birthright require four hours a week of our volunteers.” The Athens closing was particularly sad, Mrs. Weaver said. Birthright Atlanta had subsidized it for the past 18 months. At the time of its opening almost 13 years ago, an estimated 1,000 young women were being bused yearly to Atlanta for abortions by those supporting abortion. Mrs. Weaver estimates the office, which was staffed only three or four days a week because of a lack of volunteers, handled about 100 calls a month. An additional 120 were forwarded monthly to Atlanta. A community volunteer in Athens will continue as liaison between that area and the Atlanta office, she explained. The Lawrenceville office was staffed two-and-a-half days a week and averaged 100 calls a month, according to Mrs. Weaver. Recently there has been some agitation in Gwinnett County to reopen a facility there, she said. St. John Neumann parish sponsored a special collection on the Marian feast of the Assumption to raise funds for Birthright. “But it’s not just a Catholic community problem,” Mrs. Weaver observed, adding that the Gwinnett County Right-To-Life organization and a Dacula Methodist minister and his wife have pledged assistance. To reopen a Birthright office in Lawrenceville, a minimum of 100 people would need to pledge $10 a month, ac cording to Terry Weaver. In the Athens area, 150 people making a similar pledge, and a corps of volunteers would be needed. That office would be responsible for its own advertising and telephone calls to Atlanta would involve a toll Mrs. Weaver pointed out, explaining the difference in needs.
