PAGE 15 — The Georgia Bulletin, October 12, 1989 Pope Preaches Reconciliation In Divided Korea BY AGOSTINO BONO SEOUL, South Korea (CNS) — Pope John Paul II preach ed reconciliation in a divided Korea and said the Asian peninsula’s political status is symbolic of the historical and ideological divisions hindering world peace. During an Oct. 7-9 trip to close the 44th International Eucharist Congress in Seoul, the pope’s activities included: — Saying publicly for the first time that he wants to visit China, where Catholics are divided between a pro government church that does not accept Vatican authority and a clandestine church loyal to the pope. — Meeting bishops from troubled Asian nations where normal contact with the Vatican has been interrupted. — Asking for continued human rights improvements in South Korea and praising the government’s progress toward democracy. Theme of the Oct. 5-8 congress was “Christ Our Peace,” and the pope asked Catholics to help overcome divisions by sharing Christ’s “life-giving love through service” to others. “The Korean nation is symbolic of a world divided and not yet able to become one in peace and justice,” he said Oct. 8 at the closing Mass of the congress. “East is divided from West, North from South. These divisions are the heritage of history and of the ideological conflicts which so often divide peoples who otherwise would wish to live in peace and brotherhood,” he said. Police estimated that more than 1 million people attended the outdoor Mass at Seoul’s Youido Plaza. The entire Catholic population of South Korea is 2.3 million, according to 1988 Vatican figures. Catholics form 5.5 percent of the population. In a peace message the pope read immediately after the Mass, he expressed the church’s “hope and sorrow” for “the people of North Korea and especially its Catholic com munity.” The pope asked Christ to “hasten the day when Koreans will be reconciled in mutual trust and respect and reunited in the joy of brotherly love.” The North Korean Communist government did not allow its Catholics to attend the congress, although 20 lay people were formally invited. The North Korean government never responded to the in vitations sent by congress organizers, said Joaquin Navarro-Valls, Vatican press spokesman. Navarro-Valls said there are no bishops or priests in North Korea. The pope, in his peace message, also expressed his desire to visit “our brothers and sisters in Christ living in mainland China.” Coupled to this was an appeal to Chinese Catholics to foster “reconciliation within the ecclesial community” and to work “for the progress of their noble nation.” Attending the congress was Vatican-appointed Arch bishop Dominic Tang of Canton, China. He lives in Hong Kong because the government will not allow him to return to China. Congress participants also included bishops from the Asian trouble spots of Vietnam and Burma. Congress organizers invited 14 Vietnamese bishops, but only two were allowed to attend by their government. In at tendance were Archbishop Paul Nguyen Van Binh of Ho Chi Minh City and Auxiliary Bishop Francois Xavier Nguyen Van Sang of Hanoi. Two bishops came from Burma, scene of Buddhist-led demonstrations seeking greater democracy and where the government greatly restricts travel inside and outside the country. Navarro-Valls said the pope devoted a large part of the afternoon of Oct. 8 to meeting privately with these bishops, who are seldom able to contact the Vatican. Regarding South Korea, the pope asked greater respect for human rights and a continued movement toward democracy. He also opposed violence and hatred as a means to overcome the country’s ills. During several meetings with military-supported Presi dent Roh Tae Woo, the pope said South Korea “bears the scars of division and conflict” and seeks the “peaceful and just pathways toward a national life and reunification based on authentic justice, freedom and inalienable human rights.” He noted “the strong desire of all your people to proceed along the way to full democracy.” At the same time, the pope said the situation had greatly improved since his first visit in 1984, after a series of bloody encounters between police and students protesting the policies of a military-led government. Flight Over USSR By Pope Historic ABOARD THE PAPAL FLIGHT TO SEOUL, South Korea (CNS) — Pope John Paul II became the first pontiff to fly over the Soviet Union and marked the flight with a message to President Mikhail Gor bachev asking “the blessing of the Most High on all the Soviet people.” The flight came during a period of growing Vatican-Soviet detente, marked by a relaxing of Soviet restrictions on religion. During the historic Oct. 6-7 flight, the pope used a news conference to plead for greater religious freedom in the Soviet Union as part of Gorbachev’s reform programs. He said the increased openness to religion by Soviet officials gives rise to “great expectations” and shows that the Soviet Union has not been able to overcome “the staying power of the religiosity of the Russians and the other peoples in the Soviet Union.” Another important Soviet factor has been “the growth in interest, or rather the need to maintain all human rights,” the pope said. The pope described Gorbachev’s reform programs, called “perestroika,” as “a desire to change a system” that was “rather totalitarian in times past to a more democratic system.” The pope read his radio message to Gorbachev in English at 9:23 p.m. Oct. 6 Moscow time as the plane flew over the Moscow airport, said Joaquin Navarro- Valls, papal press spokesman. The message was recorded by the airport control tower, and tower officials said they would transmit it to the Kremlin for relaying to East Berlin, where Gorbachev was visiting, Navarro-Valls said.
