USCC Names Mercy Sister As Education Secretary WASHINGTON (CNS) — Mercy Sister Lourdes Sheehan, an official at the National Catholic Educational Associa tion, has been named secretary of education at the U.S. Catholic Conference. She will be the first woman to serve in the post. Sister Sheehan, executive director of the NCEA’s Na tional Association of Boards of Education since 1985, suc ceeds Father Thomas Gallagher, who will leave the post in January 1990, after 10 years. Msgr. Robert Lynch, USCC general secretary, announc ed the appointment Dec. 6. Calling Sister Sheehan “one of the most knowledgeable educators in the United States,’’ Msgr. Lynch praised the nun for giving “outstanding leadership to the board of education movement.’’ He added that Sister Sheehan “can be counted on to pro vide the inspiration and guidance needed for the con ference’s educational apostolate in the years ahead.” Msgr. Lynch also commended Father Gallagher for his work. “He has kept one eye on the goals and educational objec tives of the church and the other on the realities of the socie ty in which it operates,” Msgr. Lynch said. “The balance has served us well.” About her appointment. Sister Sheehan, a native of Savannah, said she was convinced Catholic education “is the most important means the church has to fulfill its mis sion to evangelize.” She added there were several ap proaches within “one mission” and that “many of the church’s educational efforts are successful... some deserve attention.” But "all need a renewed vision and a commit ment to the future,” she said. A member of her order’s Baltimore province. Sister Sheehan taught at several schools in the Savannah diocese and was principal at Convent of Mercy School in Mobile, Ala., in 1965 and at Mount de Sales High School in Macon. Ga., from 1966 to 1971. Sister Sheehan served as director of secondary education, director of Christian education and superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Richmond, Va., from 1971 to 1982. She was president of the Virginia Council for Private Education from 1979 to 1982 and president of the board of directors for the National Center for Research in Total Catholic Education from 1984 to 1986.
