"Gift Of Life" Sunday Set
Peace Walk And Rally
Planned At Kings Bay
St. Patrick’s Church in Norcross will
join other area churches and religious
organizations Sunday, Dec. 31, for “Gift of
Life Sunday.”
For the fourth year in a row, American
Red Cross Blood Services of the Atlanta
region will hold blood drives on “Gift of
Life Sunday” in order to offset the usual
drop in blood collections during the holiday
season.
Six Red Cross bloodmobiles will be sta
tioned throughout the metropolitan area,
providing the opportunity to donate blood.
St. Patrick’s, located at 2140 Beaver Ruin
Road, will host the bloodmobile from 8
a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The entire blood dona
tion process, from registration to
refreshments, takes about an hour. The ac
tual drawing of blood takes six to 10
minutes. Donors cannot contract any
disease from giving blood. Most healthy
people between ages 17 and 71 who weigh
at least 110 pounds are able to give blood.
Last year’s “Gift of Life Sunday” blood
drives netted 215 pints of blood. This year’s
goal is 250 pints.
“When someone gives blood, they give
life, with all the special moments and
everyday experiences that make it
precious,” commented Beth Greenberg of
Red Cross donor services. "A single dona
tion, which can help as many as four peo
ple, can be the critical difference between
life and death for someone who needs
blood.”

sites and times on “Gift of Life Sunday”

day between 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The annual Feast of the Holy Innocents
witness at the Kings Bay Naval Base at St.
Marys, Ga., will be held Dec. 27-30. About
300 people are expected to attend. The
witness is held to raise public opposition to
the new Trident nuclear submarine fleet to
be based at the new installation.
Members of Pax Christi/Atlanta will
provide the common meal at Crooked
River State Park, headquarters for the
witness, located near the base. The menu
consists of cole slaw, three bean salad,
monastery bread, cookies and a fruit
punch. Funding for the meal is being pro
vided by the Atlanta Clergy and Laity Con
cerned and the Trident To Life campaign.
Schedule for the witness includes train
ing for participation in civil disobedience,
the distribution of leaflets at the gates of
the submarine base during shift changing
periods, and visits to residents of St.
Marys.
Childrens’ activities are also included
for the families who attend the Christmas
week gathering. There will be candlelight
vigils at the base and a public program at
St. Marys.
A peace walk and rally at the main gate
of the base is scheduled for Dec. 29 at 9:30
a.m. Possible civil disobedience may
follow.

Spiritual Growth Course Offered
Catechists Gather For Retreat
During Advent, over 90
parish catechetical leaders
and religion teachers from
across the archdiocese
gathered together at Simp-
sonwood Retreat Center for
a day of fellowship and
prayer for themselves and
for the people they serve in
their religious education
programs in the parishes.
Sponsored by the arch
diocesan Office of
Religious Education, the
retreat day was lead by
Sister Mary Sue Kennedy

the day to follow.”
At the day’s end, she
challenged the cathchists
“to go home now to your
parish programs and do
this or a similar activity of
Advent prayer with the
students and adults you
serve. As religious
educators it is our respon

become pray-ers as we
teach them prayers
simultaneously.”
