seemed not to yield to treatment. Owing to his sit
uation I did not approach him on the subject of death*
and all that he said in reference to death (and that
was little) just a few minutes before he died, he call”
ed “Pa ! pa!—let me go home.” I think at the
time I misunderstood what he meant. I raised him
up and he said, “ Pa, pa,” to. the last; but previous,
and frequently, would say, “0, Lord.” When I
laid him back, his lungs closed, and he breathed his
last. This is the first time I ever had to record the
death of one of my children. John Thomas was the
only son, and last child of my first wife, Elizabeth
Pacus, who died two weeks after his birth. He was
a promising youth—stout and health v, and was easi
ly controlled, quiet, obedient, and had the character
of being a good boy at school. His death has cast a
gloom upon the'family. I have but one more son
left, about eleven years old, and he is like the lonely
dove. Awful, indeed, is it, to think of the separa
tion ! We mourn with sorrowful hearts, and eyes
flowing with tears; but my desire and prayer to
God is that this dispensation of Providence may be
sanctified to the good of my family, relations, and
sorrowing friends, that we may be prepared in time
to meet death with all its terrors, in peace with God.
Lord enable us to submit to His will without mur
mur or complaint, for Thou doest what seemeth
good. The Queen of Sheba said to the wise man
Solomon, “ The half has not been said or told.”
Brother Beebe, please publish this notice, and

Faith and Repentance.
Let its nsk-tsho Imjamdant Question.
(Brethren be not too secure,)
What it is to be a Christian,
Bow we may our hearts assure,
Yain is all our best devotion,
If on false foundations built;
True religion’s more than notion—
Something must be known and felt.
’Tis to trust our well beloved,
If His blood has washed us clean;
’Tis to hope our guilt’s removed,
Though we feel it rise within:
To believe that all is finished,
Though so much remains t’ endure ;
Find the dangers undiminished,
let to hold deliverance sure.
’Tis to credit contradictions ;
Talk with him one neve sees ;
Cry and groan beneath afflictions,
Yet to dread the thoughts of ease :
‘Tis to feel the fight against us,
Yet the victory hope to gain ;
To believe that Christ hath cleansed us,
Though the leprosy remain.
’Tis to hear the Holy Spirit
Prompting us to secret prayer;
To rejoice in Jesus’ merit,
Yet continual sorrow bear ;
To receive a full remission
Os our sins for evermore ;
Yet to sigh with sore contrition,
Begging mercy every hour.
• SOUTHERN BAPTIST MESSENGER.
To be steadfast in believing,;
Yet to tremble, fear, and quake
Every moment be receiving
Strength, and yet be always’weak }
To be fighting, fleeing, turning ;
Ever sinking, yet to swim ;
To converse with Jesus, mourning
For ourselves, or else for him.

Trust.
Quiet as a peaceful river,
Quiet as the wind-hushed seas,
In Jehovah trusting ever,
We are kept in perfect peace.
We’ll not ask Thee what Thou doest—
Whatsoe’er it be, ’tis right;
Thou our Friend, of friends the truest,
Wilt sustain ’mid storm and night!
Peep beneath the warring ocean,
Peep beneath the howling flood,
All unmoved in the commotion,
Lie the promises ot God.
W e are anchored firmly to them,
Though in tatters hang our shrouds,
Calmly we look up, and through them,
View the thunder-riven clouds.
This our constant heart consoleth,
And we will not be afraid,
’Tis our Heavenly Father ruleth,
And on Him our souls ere stayed.
Quiet as a peaceful river,
Quiet as the wind-hushed seas,
In Jehovah trusting ever,
We are kept in perfect peace !
