speech was very impaired from the'first, she spoke
but seldom, though she was as qpiet and calm as a
lamb; never did she complain or murmurdm the
least.
Jesus has made a dying bed
As soft as downy pillows are.
Oh, that we may imitate her virtues and be prepar

Religion.
BT MRS. HEMANS.
Like snow, that falls where waters glide,*
Earth's pleasures pass away ;
They rest on time’s resistless tide,
And cold are while they stay,
But joys that from Religion flow,
Like stars that-gild the night,
Abiid the darkest gloom of woe,
Shine forth in sweetest light.
Religion’s ray no clouds obscure,.
But o’er the Christian’s soul •
It sheds a radiance calm and pure,
Though tempests round him troll..
His heart may break ’neath sorrow’s stroke, >
But to its latest thrill,
Like diamonds shining when they’re broke,
That ray will light it still.
The Inner Calm.
Calm me* my God, and keep me calm,
While'these hot breezes blow,
Belike the night dew ? s cooling bal*m,>
Upon earth’s feveied brow.
Calm me, my God,. 1 and keep mo calm,*
Soft resting on my breast,
Soothe me with holy hymn and psalm,-.
And bid my spirit rest.
Calm me, my God, and keep mo calm ;.
Let thine outstretched wing
Be like the shade of Elim’s palm,.
Beside her desert-spring.
Yes, keep me calm, though loud hud rud®
The sounds my car that greet,
Calm in the closet’s solitude,
Calm in the bustling street.
Calm in the hour of buoyant health,
Calm in my hour of pain,
Calm in my poverty or; wealth,,
Calm in my loss or gain.
Calm in the sufferance of wrong,
Like him who bore my shame,
Calm ’mid the threat’ning, taunting throng,
Who hate thy holymame.
Galm when the great world’s news with power
Mjr listening spirit stir;
Let not the tidings of the hour
E’er find itoo fond an ear.
Calm as the ray of sun or star
Which storms assail in vain;
Moving uruffled thro’ earth’s war ;
The eternalcakuitto gain..

Haste Not—Rost Not.
“Without hasfe! without rest I”
Bind the motto to thy breast!
Bear it with thee as a spell;
Storm oi*Sunshine, guard it well ;
lleod not flowers that round thee bloom—
Bear it onward to the tomb !
Haste not—let no thoughtless deed*
Mt?r fore’er the spirit’s speed ;
Ponder well and know the right,
Onward then with all thy might;
Haste not —years can ne’er atone*”
Bor one reckless action done!
Rest not!—life is sweeping by,
Go and dare before you die;
Something mighty and sublime
Leave behind to conquer time;
Glorious ’tis to live for aye
When these forms have passed away.
“ Haste not!—rest not!” Calmly wait ;.
Meekly bear the storms of fate ;
Duty be*thy polar gyide ;
Do thee right, whate’er betide !
Haste not! —rest not! Conflicts past,
God shall crown thy work at last!
