too, her Bible, which told of another and better life>
and resting on its promises the light of heavenly
hope, stiearned into her soul. She felt those fears
peculiar alone to woman ; and when referring to the
scene she would have to pass through, she said to her
now bereaved husband, that if she died, she felt that
she would be better off. Julia had never made a
public profession, by uniting with the church, but no
doubt would, had she have lived awhile longer. But
we humbly hope she was united to Christ the Living
Head. The closing scene of life, was sad indeed,
and one that surviving friends will never forget.—
But she is gone, she sleeps now in the lonely grave
yard, and that form once lovely and dear, is now food
for corruption, and a banquet for worms. The hus
band and little daughter may go to her grave to
weep ; but the gentle spirit of Julia we hope is in
the skies—at rest with God, harping with angels, and
singing with the Redeemed. A FRIEND.

The Rainy Day.
BY ELLEN LEE.
The mist is on yon mountain's brow,
A cloud hangs o’er the vale—
The sunset leaves no cheering glow
Upon Night’s darksome veil;
But all is dark, and lone, and drear,
For deeply groans the dying year ;
Its race is almost run—
Its spring of light and joy is gone,
. Its summer vanished all too soon,
And autumn now, with shortening days,
Bathes in the light of golden rays ;
And sighs upon the listening ear;
The grave is cold, and damp, and drear,
Its portal knows no sun.
Yet, through this cloudy, dreary day,
And through the darker drearier night,
We see the light of Hope’s bright ray—
'Mid darkest storms it brightly plays,
Dispelling all their gloom.
Its gentle light foretells the day,
When wint’ry skies shall pass away ;
TV hen singing birds and fragrant flowers
Shall gladden fairy-shaded bowers—
E’en “ Death shall lose its venomcd stin",”
And the cold grave merge into spring—
A spring of Heavenly bloom.

Nature’s Poets.
BY G. BUCEVALE,
Ever with a pen unstinting,
On the rock, and tree, and sod ;
Nature’s subtle hand is printing
Pages of the book of God.
Yonder sky that bends in glory
O’er the deep and silent sea,
Writes therein its own fair story,
Reads its own biography.
Every solemn cloud is writing
Tales of shadow on the hills ;
Every summer breeze inditing
Rippling stories on the rills.

Cavingtou,
Mountains hold within their keeping
Legends of earth's primal day,
Gather in a clasp unceasing
Records of the past away.
Antique medals of creation,
• Seals that may not rust with age,
Grand old sermons of mutation,
Graven on a stony page.
All aiound our rock-paved dwelling,
Bending from its dome above, *
Sweetest oracles are telling
Os wisdom, and of love.
Voiceless, yet melodious preachers,
Whispering that we too may write,
Earth awaits the poet teachers,
Who shall read her books aright?
In the future’s hidden pages
There are leaves for us to fill;
In the volumes of the ages
We record for good or ill.
Not alight and passing story,
Is our history sublime;
We may live a tale of glory,
Grander than the songs of time.
