EDITORIAL
Discontent has invariably been looked
upon negatively by state and society.
However, discontent can have positive
as well as negative values and it is from
this positive point of view that I wish
to direct your thinking.
As one looks hack, one will find that
the skies of history are laden with dis
contented stars. History contends that
discontent and intellect are brothers in
the same battle. The historical figures
of Socrates, Jesus, Martin Luther, Vol
taire and nameless others, tell us that
discontent can be desirable. Any figure
to which one can point in world history,
first of all; has been a man discontented
with himself; dissatisfied with his spir
itual. intellectual and physical limita
tions. True intelligence sees these per
sonal, spiritual, physical and intellectual
vacuums from which discontent ensues.
At this season in our school calendar,
it is customary for parents, friends and
general well wishers to pat us on our
backs and tell us what wizards we are.
It is a natural thing for our chests to
swell in pride and for us to say how
pleased we are with our genius. After
all, all day in chemistry lab with various
and sundry smells is no slight matter.
Writing report after report in the Social
Science classes is no small ordeal. And
so we, as the large bullfrog in the
small pond, lose all sense of proportion
as to our true size.
I do not say that graduating from
college is a triviality. We have worked
too hard; our parents have worked too
long; our professors have given too much
to say that graduating is a “tale told
by an idiot . . . signifying nothing." How
ever. the greatest thing our graduation
should give us is not the much-sought
sheep-skin; but. rather, graduation
should give us a severe case of divine
discontent. For what need we be dis
content? We should be discontent be-
