Although you descended upon
us like a swarm of green crabs—
filling the girls’ dormitory and
taking possession of the boys’—
taking every seat in the center
section of Davage Auditorium—
dashing and battering ■taa.t f
cannorneip A gratulate
you upbn your choice (of school.
In selecting Clark as the place
to continue your education you
have said, “I believe in the aims
and ideas for which Clark Col
lege stands, and shall strive to
uphold its principles.”
Now that registration is over
and you are enrolled in the larg
est class in Clark’s history, stop
and ask the question, “Why did
I come to college?” If you came
to socialize, to participate only
in sports, or to be a “book
worm,” then you have the wrong
conception of college. The pur
pose of college is to develop
a well-rounded personality. So
cialization without an educa
tion or education without
socialization will not aid in this
development. First, apply your
self diligently to youf studies,
"UiTtJII "LiiKB pcX-rtT^j-iT t/lrc. c*
ricular activities afforded by the
campus. By so doing in 1948 you
will go forth better prepared and
equipped to meet the demands
of the world.
Remember, you are privileged
to continue your education while
others die to maintain this priv
ilege. It will be you to whom
the world will look for guidance
—strive hard, think soberly, aim
high, and in twelve months you
will be known not as “green-
crabs,” but as intelligent sopho
mores.

Dedication
The Panther Staff takes pleas
ure in dedicating the first issue
of the Panther for the 1944-45
school year to the historic fresh
man class and to the many new
students who come this year to
study at Clark College. This is
sue is also dedicate to the new
members of the faculty with the
expressed hope that they will
still share of their knowledge
with other students as they en
ter Clark for the first time.
Our Policy
The policy of the Staff is:
To print the views and opin
ions of the student body.
To act as a means for student
expression.
To encourage the students of
Clark College to make regular
contributions and to share with
the other students their talents.
To do these things it will be
necessary for the entire school
to co-operate—to see to it that
news pertaining to students and
of interest reaches the Staff’s of
fice in time for publication. We
depend upon you to keep the
news rolling and we will let you
see it in print once a month.
The College Ward Is
Too Full
—Of students who think a class
room is a Pullman with a few
sleepers and an observation sec
tion.
—Of athletes who think that
brawn makes up for brains.
—Of Campus Leader Climbers
who get offices and then never
do a bit of work in them.
—Of Staff members who must
“grandstand” officials to keep
their jobs.
—Of Alumni who always talk
about the “good old days.”
—Of one-track mind students
whose sun rises and sets in the
narrow confines of Greek Letter
Organizations.
—Selected.
Our Motto
The college was given its mot
to by the late Doctor William
Henry Cogman, the first Negro
to be hired by the Methodist
Episcopal Church and the first
Negro President. Dr. Crogman’s
years of service to the institu
tion numbered forty-five years
—thirty-eight years as a teach
er and seven years as college
president.
Deadline for December issue,
November 15, 1944.
