If “Truth is Light,” then it’s Awfully Dark in the ‘House
By Brian L. Thompson
Editor-in-Chief
At 4:00 a.m., the day
before run-off elections, a few
Morehouse students thought
it would be a good idea to
defile the names of Paul
Winfield and Trevor Julian.
They probably made a
midnight run to Kinko's, ran
off copies of a highly
incendiary flyer and hustled
back to campus to hand them
out before it became light
outside.
Are Winfield and Julian
really gay?
Who cares? If the entire
nation doesn't seem to care
that Monica Lewinsky has
seen the Presidential log, why
should Morehouse students
care in regards to the sexual
preference of their vice-
presidential candidates?
Obviously they don't since
two-thirds of the campus
didn't even bother voting.
If "truth is light," then we
need to turn the light on and
stop kidding ourselves:
Morehouse is an extremely
homophobic campus.
This flyer is proof positive
that we as a campus
perpetuate the same kind of
discrimination which
Morehouse was initially
founded to counter. For those
of you who don't know, some
homosexual students formed
a group called Adodi a few
years back. The Senate then
rejected Adodi's bid to become
a legitimate club until the
administration intervened.
Funny how ignorance
leads students to believe
homosexuals and whites
reflect badly on our school.
Printing this flyer only shows
that you have absolutely too
much time on your hands and
too much money to throw
away.
If being gay supposedly
makes you less than a man,
then judging someone on the
basis of their sexual preference
makes you less than a human
being.
If being gay supposedly makes you less than a man,
then judging someone on the basis of their sexual
preference makes you less than a human being.
The Illustrious Illusion of the Morehouse Mystique
By Mikhia Hawkins
Campu News Editor
Here, at the prestigious
and world-renowned
Morehouse College, the
"summit of Black collegiate
excellence," students are
bombarded with
propagandistic exaltation of
the Morehouse mystique. The
Men of Morehouse are noble,
worthy of reverence, or so we
are told. But let's be honest,
only a few of us buy in to that
facade, for we know 1 that only
a few of the future Men of
Morehouse, our peers, are
truly worthy of such
distinction and praise.
It is true that Morehouse
does graduate an exceptional
number of successful,
ambitious, and benevolent
men, but the Morehouse
mystique is so exaggerated
that the collective ego of this
institution has distended
nearly to the point of eruption.
If the Morehouse community,
as a whole, was as virtuous as
many make it out to be, then
the walls surrounding this ego
would not feel such pressure,
and this community would be
able to live up to its name.
But Morehouse is ethically
limited just as anyone is, and
in order to uphold lofty ethical
standards, members of the
Morehouse family resort to
hypocrisy.
Let's briefly consider, in
support of this claim, the
former president of
Morehousfe College, Leroy
Keith.
Leroy Keith allegedly
embezzled money from this
institution. This allegation is
mere speculation, but what is
clearly evident from his
proposals for a large, opulent
presidential house, and an
acute increase in the
presidential salary is that
Keith was avaricious, showing

insufficient concern for
Morehouse students. Yes,
during his term a large
endowment was amassed for
the college. But he took
advantage of it for the
purposes of satiating his own
greed.
Keith must have thought
he was invincible, but his
pride nearly led him into self
ruin, and a fragment of the
raging hypocrisy evident at
Morehouse permeated the
walls of his ego, spilling out
into the student body.
Its effect on the students
was clear in the 1996-97 school
year, during which SGA
officers emulated the
infamous former president in
contemptible ways. Self-
centeredness ran rampant
throughout the student
organization, and egos were
collapsing in droves. Officers
were forced to resign, as was
Keith, and the SGA was in
absolute disarray, as was the
administration after Keith's
resignation.
It is clear that the
hypocrisy in the Morehouse
students reflects that of the
administration. Students see
straight through the lies
behind the high standards
which most members of the
Morehouse community claim
to live up to. If the
administration does not
adhere to these standards,
why would it expect the
students to do so? The only
example that the
administration is setting for
students is one of acquiring
wealth, power, and status, and
doing so while maintaining a
false reputation of being of
good character.
I am not contending that
the Morehouse mystique is
merely a lie, but it is not
altogether true. The college
has yet to realize its potential,
and when it does, only then
will the Men of Morehouse
truly reflect the standards of
greatness imposed on the
student body.
But until then, the
pervasive hypocrisy which
lies in the imposition of these
standards will continue to
erode the integrity of the
school.
