The Closing of Chivers
Opens Up Some Complaints
Cedric Dark/STAFF
STANDING ROOM ONLYs With the closing of Chivers Hall,
students have to wait significantly longer for seats In Lane
Hall during dining hours.
By Chester Starks Jr,
Sports Editor
Lately, the cafeteria has
been serving up nothing but
disappointments,
With Chivers Hall dosed
for remodeling since April 20,
students have been left
cramming into the
significantly smaller Lane
Dining Hall, resulting in
longer lines and a shortage of
seating,
And although cafeteria
hours have been extended,
many students feel there still
is not enough time allotted to
compensate for the
inoperation of Chivers.
"Closing Chivers is very
inconvenient for students,"
says Omar Hawk, a Freshman,
"The lines are twice as long
and the cafe is constantly
running out of food."
Ronald Tuck, resident
director of Fair Street
Dormitory, admits that, "right
now, everyone is upset,.. but
we're working on [it]."
For a short time, students
were allowed to take food out
of Lane and eat in Chivers,
However, this arrangement
has now been discontinued,
Mary Higginbotham,
manager of Gourmet Services
- which runs the cafeteria -
feels that the problem has been
assuaged by extending the
dining hours.
"It's no more crowded
than it has been," she says.
"There are no more problems
than there were in the past.
"We've doubled and
tripled all employees at each
[serving] station, All of this is
to improve the [students']
facility."
Some students, however,
beg to differ.
"For the money I pay, they
should provide better
services," says Tony Spencer, a
Freshman Political Science
major.
