Veritas' watchful eye spots another sign of progress in Ad
vancing Athens. Perhaps the Street Department could ex
pand its fleet and offer a ferry service during the rainy
sea son.
mud slinging: Georgia style
On Oct. 15 three gubernatorial
candidates, Jimmy Carter, Linda Jenness, and
Hal Suit met with approximately one
thousand UGA students in the crowded
Memorial Hall Ballroom.
Hal Suit apparently brought out
more of his supporter at this meeting: when
Mr. Suit entered the room a majority of the
audience gave him a standing ovation. Some
of his supporters stood to applaud him at
other times.
Mr. Carter, who was initially
received with much applause, received a
smaller hand for his speech than did either
Suit or Jenness.
Mrs. Jenness' speech stating her and
her party's views on the war, women's
liberation, blacks, students, and working
people was interrupted numerous times by
applause from those who had found an area
of agreement.
Each candidate gave a ten minute
speech and a five munute rebuttal. Mr. Carter
talked about being a Georgian, understanding
Georgians, and being certain of winning. Mr.
Suit talked about being a Georgian, a
newsman, and about Mr. Carter's being a
politician. Mr. Suit said he was a concerned
citiaen.
Carter attacked Suit for not having
a written platform, and for saying one thing
to one group and another thing to another,
Suit accused Carter of making a deal with a
Long County political boss(Frank Dawson),
and of not believing in the good old two party
system.
Mrs. Jenness said she would use the
governor's office to influence immeditate
withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam. Her
platform also included support for the right
of Blacks to control their own communities
and the right of women to control their
bodies. She said there was essentially no
difference in the Democratic and Republican
parties. After witnessing the issue-evading
performances of Suit and Carter, I can only
agree.
But all the candidates were pinned
down when question time came, and we found
out a few things: Carter hires no underpaid
workers on his farm- he has three full partners
and they hire the workers, Suit likes Agnew;
Suit and Carter would not legalize marijuana,
Jenness would; Suit's feeling about women's
liberation were that women are already better
off than they used to be; And no one wants
to build us a new Union building.

John and I wuz seated write necks
to "the giant green makarone noodles" in
front of Brumby Womans Dormatory. And
we were enjoying the sunshine, and tawking
a'bout different things. Among thez things we
tawked about, wuz the roomers of Narkotic
agents on the kampus of the University of
Goorga.
John sed to me, "Whistlin' John, I
wonder why are fellow students get folks
arested for possession of Narkotics." And Me,
I just shrugged, and sed, "I don't know
John." And then John, real-rysing it was his
turn to speek sed, "I don't no weather it is
thair cents of justice, or if they just think
they are helping keep Amerika clean, for their
children." I spoke with grate sompathee,
saying "It is bekause they need money to by
certain items of necessitee." And the poll-ese
pay them for folks they katch with
Narkotics." "Oh, sed John, "kinda like
bounty hunters eh?" And I just nodded.
After a short pause, John spoke a
gain, saying, "Whistin' John, do theez people
who are narkotics agents real-eyes they kan
ruen a brothers life buy doing that."
I stopped for a moment and sed,
"Yes John, I think they do." Well John got all
x-sited, and jumped up, and sed, "thats not
fare." And I sed, "John, at this tyme the only
thing folks can do is be very careful."
"But," I kontinued, "things mite
change soon, so folks will not be divided buy
mistrust of each others." "OK," sed John,
"preety soon."
And he grinned, really weird.
