ATLANTA BARB-Page 2
The Gay Scene On
Florida’s West Coast
On a recent tour of
Florida's West Coast the
Barb discovered several
very interesting places to
go. Although the West
Coast is considered to be
much more conservative
than the East/ one can
certainly find a lot to do
and nice people to do it
with. The people there-
demonstrate 4 ‘ Southern
hospitality'’ with their
warmth and friendliness,
and they like to have fun
as well.
Travelling in a nor
therly direction from
Naples, the Southern most
city, we found our first
gay bar in Ft. Myers;
the Red Lion, located at
1514 Jackson St. The bar
tender is friendly and the
bar has an enormous
seating capacity with a
package store included;
With a population in ex
cess of 30,000, I was sur
prised to find just one
gay bar eventhough others
were listed in some di
rectories. So after “fun
in the sun” drop by and
ad your name to their
social register.
The next bar we visited
was the Sand Box, just
outside Sarasota, In
Osprey on U.S. Highway
41. This lounge features
frequent drag shows and
takes on a Supper Club
environment.
Friends informed me of
the Green Parrot in Lake
land, but because of my
schedule, I was unable to
visit this one. You may
inquire locally for the
address of it.
Although we were told
that Brandon, Fla. was a
gay place, we were unable
to locate any gay estab
lishments there, so we
moved on to Tampa; the
city that has everything
to offer, and is an abso
lute must on your next
vacation plans. In addition
to several Adult Book
Stores, the newest. The
Book Nook on Kennedy,
there are 4 well known
bars where you might
score. The most popular
is Rene’s, located at 2605
West Kennedy. On week
ends there are wall to
wall bodies; a com
bination of all types, sizes
and shapes. The bar is
presently being enlarged
to accommodate more ca
pacity and will feature
some of the finest drag
shows in Tampa. Every
one goes there and you
Gay Pride Week 1973
are sure to find the trick
of your choice.
Cu Cu Jo’s located at
1725 Kennedy St. is where
you see the girls and
plenty of them. The bar
features female imper
sonation on special oca-
sions and weekends with
some of the finest talent
that Tampa has to offer.
‘ 4 Shawn’ ’, the producer
and director also does
t his bit to entertain you*
with an outstanding per
formance. A buffet lunch
eon is the feature on
Sunday with all you want
to eat. and I understand
it is a big spread too.
Hungry or thirsty? Drop
by.
The Carousel, when you
want to be elegant, is a
must. Some feel this bar,
which consists of the
younger collegiate crowd,
is clickish, but really all
you have to do is give
them that smile and you
are in. The dance floor
is cozy with a disc joc
key who plays your
favorite records, and
everyone joins together to
have fun. When in Tampa,
be sure to pay a visit
to this place, it is located
at 1806 W. Platt St., and
see for yourself.
Last but by no means
the least is the Ohio Bar
on the corner of Tampa
and Polk Sts. This could
be described as a mixed
bar with a little bit of
everything; straight by
day and gay by night.
The bartender, “David,”
has a tremendous fol
lowing and loves every
one. The drinks are very
moderately priced and
their ; Cuban sandwiches
are “out of this world.”
Since this is probably the
newest gay bar in Tampa,
it could very easily be
overlooked. But don’t do
it. The bar has existed in
Tampa for years, but has
only been known as a gay
bar for the last six
months.,
St. Petersburg has two
very nice bars, the Sher
wood located at 7 N. 1st
St. and Jack’s 809 Club
and 809 Gulf Blvd. on the
beach. These were highly
reccommended to me but
due to the schedule, I was
unable to see for myself.
Don’t let that retired city
fool you.
We hope that this in
formation has been help
ful to you in planning your
next vacation to the “Sun
shine State”, especially
the West Coast.
