THE JEW IN ENGLISH
LITERATURE
(Continued from Page 11)
was a firm believer in the power of
his race, and much of his writing is
filled with the defense and exaltation
of the Jewish race. This defense ap
pears in "Contarini Fleming/’ and
in “Coningsby,” but most of all in
"Tancred.” In the latter story he re
gards Christianity as the Judaism of
the multitude, but it3 substantial
greatness is all Jewish, for Judaism
is "the church in which Jesus was
born and which he never quitted.”
Within the past two decades there
has come into vogue stories dealing
with scenes of Jewish life. The cen
tury-long segregation of the Jews
from the communal life of the people
among whom they dwell has develop
ed naturally social customs and con
ditions peculiar to themselves. Even
up to the present, time they have es
tablished Jewish centers in large
cities of England and America, and
conditions created by these centers
have furnished literary material for
many writers. Though many Christ
ian writers can enter into an under
standing of these conditions and
describe them with sympathy and feel
ing, their best interpreters are nat
urally Jews themselves. Of these Eng
lish Jewish writers in the realm of
fiction, the foremost is Israel Zang-
will.
Zangwill received a commission
from the Jewish Publication Society
of America to write a novel about
Jewish life, and the result was "Child
ren of the Ghetto.” His perfect under
standing of the conditions which he
pictures, his complete comprehension
of their psychological background,
combined with his brilliant style, pro
duced a remarkable work that com
manded the attention of the literary
world. His latest drama was "The
Melting Pot” wherein he pictures the
assimilative powers of the republic
and attacks the inter-marriage prob
lem.
Samuel Gordon, like Zangwill, wrote
from practical experience. His chief
novels of Jewish life are "Daughters
of Shen,” "Lesser Destinies,” "Sons
of the Covenant” and "Unto Each
Man, His Own.”
In the field of the drama, the Jews
have not until recent years figured
numerously as dramatic writers.
Among the first of the century were
C. Z. Barnett, Leopold Lewis, Charles
Salaman. Charles Klein is numbered
among the most successful of modern
dramatists. He has written a number
of plays that have been uniformly
successful, such as "A Mile A Min
ute,” "The District Attorney,” "Hon.
John Grigsby,” "The Auctioneer,”
"The Music Master,” and "The Lion
and the Mouse.”
In all fields of literary effort, the
Jew, especially in England, is receiv
ing ever kinder notice. The weaken
ing of the power of dogmatic theology,
the disappearance of superstition, the
growing spirit of humanitarianism
and freedom, the removal of political
disabilities, all lead to a clearer
knowledge that dispels much of the
misty prejudice which ignorance orig
inated. Art is transition and truth in
art prevails in the end. And so I may
close with a note of hope that the Jew
will reach even greater heights in the
literary world of the future.
