THE WAR ECHOED IN “RONDINE”
AND CAUSED ROW
Poor innocent “La Rondine” nearly
caused a big international break. It
happened this way. Puccini, before
the war, had made arrangements with
Austrian publishers to handle the op
era and Austrian librettists were to
be the text.
The war broke out, Italy decreed
that the contract was void and an
Italian company took it over, and
Adami, the Italian, worked on the
libretto.
Leon Daudet in the “Action Fran-
caise” for unknown reason became
angered by Director Guinzberg of the
Theatre of Monaco, where the world
premiere took place. Here was neu
tral ground where this opera could be
produced safe from the reverberations
of war which were at this time dis
turbing the peace of Europe.
Leon Daudet in the “Action Fran-
caise,” has had many other squabbles
since, and has been frequently in the
newspapers for his arguments (once
he barricaded himself against the po
lice of Paris).
Attempts have been made to discov
er the reason for Daudet’s hate but to
no avail. But in effect Daudet claim
ed that Puccini was having dealings
with the enemy (Austria) in dealings
with Eischenschutz and Berte, in the
original contract, and that negotia
tions were on for performance at the
Carl Theatre at Vienna.
Is Libretto Adami’s?
Further Daudet sought to upset
matters by questioning the libretto of
Adami’s. He boldly came forth and
stated that he thought Adami had lit
tle or nothing to do with it, but that
here was the original text. Then Dau
det went on to say that the plans
which had been contemplated for the
performance of “Rondine” in Paris
were off. Because Puccini, if you
please, was dealing with the enemy!
Immediately Puccini responded and
in his own manner, clearly indicated
where he stood. In his letter, which
was given out to the newspapers,
Puccini said that he had always been
loyal and patriotic. He concluded
with: “I have taken from our ene
mies that which legally was their
property, and have given my opera to
an Italian publisher, and if that be a
crime, it is one of which I have every
reason to be proud.”
Daudet did not cease his venomous
criticisms, however, he continued to
attack Puccini, and he did so until the
day of the Italian composer’s death.
