LEHMAN AND RABINOWITZ TO
BUILI) MODEL HOUSES
New York, (J. T. A.)—Lieut-Gov.
Herbert H. Lehman and Aaron Rab-
inowitz, member of the New York
State Board of Housing, are making
possible the erection of model apart
ment buildings on the East Side
through the purchase of a site com
prising two and a half city blocks, for
$550,000. The estimated cost of erec
tion will be $2,300,000. Acquisition of
the property was announced by the
Housing Board.
The houses, to have modern im
provements as well as a swimming
pool, roof gardens and roof play
grounds, are to be erected under the
“limited dividend” plan of the hous
ing law as soon as the old buildings
of the plant of R. Hoe and Company,
printing press manufacturers, are de
molished. Maximum rentals will not
exceed $12 a room. The buildings
will house 400 families. Neither Lieut-
Gov. Lehman nor Mr. Rabinowitz will
seek to make a profit from the trans
action.
Immediate construction of the
apartment houses has been decided
upon. The buildings are to be erected
under the “limited dividend” plan of
the State Housing Law and the net in
come from the rental of the buildings
at no time can exceed 0 per cent a
year. If such a condition should arise
that this rate is exceeded it must go
hack to the tenants in rebates.
"While there has been much talk
about development of modern housing
on the east side,” said Mr. Rabinowitz,
obviously there has been little action.
This project is the first actual step in
this line in Manhattan. As soon as
the present occupants remove, the
buildings will be torn down and short
ly afterwards construction will be
started by a limited dividend com
pany.
"Credit for the suggestion which led
to the purchase of the land goes to
Miss Lilian I). Wald, head worker in
the Henry Street Settlement, and a
valued friend of Lieut-Gov. Lehman
and myself. It also is my hope that
these buildings will stand as a tribute
to former Gov. Smith, who conceived
and put into operation the State Hous
ing Law.”
UNIQUE PERSONAL SERVICE
IN ARTISTIC NEW BOOKLET
A unique type of individual service
for practical aid in Jehrzeit and other
personal mourning observances, re
cently inaugurated through a new
undertaking in New York city, is be
ing supplied in the form of a particu
larly appropriate little book which
at the same time serves as an indi
vidual memorial of genuinely artistic
character. The service is being nude
available also in other communities
throughout the country.
The new Iskor book is a compact,
attractive little volume of 32 pages,
providing all the required aids for
mourning observance and a number
of pleasing new features never before
incorporated in such forms.
In addition to a 48-year calendar
giving for each year the date of the
civil calendar corresponding to the
Hebrew Jahrzeit date, it contains a
complete series of the personal pray
ers used by mourners in the home,
cemetery and synagogue, in both He
brew and English text. The Kaddish
is given not only in Hebrew and Eng
lish, but also with a phonetic inter
linear transliteration of the Hebrew,
so that anyone even not versed in He
brew can with the aid of this pocket
text recite the prayer correctly wher
ever occasion requires. In addition,
there is a concise outline of mourn
ing rules, and also a pafe for enter
ing the family history and the tomb
stone inscription.
The book may be ordered directly
from the publishers, Iskor Press, Inc..
826 Fifth Avenue, New York City,
who will on request furnish order
forms on which to forward necessary
instructions for the inscriptions.
The book may also be secured in
double form, as where the memorial
is desired for a father and mother,
together, etc. Such booklets contain
two dedication pages, separately in
scribed, and two Jahrzeit calendars.
We suggest this volume and ad
vise its inclusion in all Jewish libra
ries whether public or private.
