I)R. MAX COIIL, Roumanian Jewish
leader and well-known physician, died
April 1st. Dr. Cohl was decorated
several times by the Roumanian gov
ernment for distinguished services,
and he was very active in phil
anthropic works.
MAX STOESSL and the late Pro
fessor Samuel Oppenheim, distinguish
ed Austrian Jews, were recently honor
ed by the Austrian government. Pres.
Miklos of the Austrian Republic con
ferred a gold medal upon Mr. Stoessl
in recognition of his thirty years of
communal activities, and a tree in
Vienna will be named for Prof. Op
penheim, astronomer and mathema
tician.
DR. CYRUS ADLER, Pres, of the
Dropsie College, Philadelphia, and the
Jewish Theological Seminary, New
York, arrived in Jerusalem with his
wife and daughter to spend the Pass-
over week there with Mr. and Mrs.
Felix Warburg.
PROFESSOR FERDINAND BAUM-
GARTEN, a retired judge of the Hun
garian Administrative Supreme Court,
has been appointed by the Hungarian
government as its representative to
The Hague court of arbitration for a
period of six years.
LORD BALFOUR, author of the Bal
four Declaration recognizing the his
toric claim of the Jewish people to
Palestine and establishing the for
mula of the Jewish National Home
there, is retiring from public life at
the age of eighty-one.
PROFESSOR ALBERT EINSTEIN
made an elaborate presentation of his
new unitary field theory at a session
of the Prussian Academy of Science
held at Berlin. His theory, Prof. Ein
stein declared, was a mathematical re
arrangement of his previous research
work, using mainly the methods of
the English mathematician, Hamilton.
DR. MAXI MILL AN HELLER, a
graduate of the Hebrew Union College
of the class of 1884 and one of the
most honored and influential alumni,
died in New Orleans. Rabbi Heller
ministered as rabbi for forty years
in the Temple Sinai of New Orleans.
MRS. JOSIAH COHEN, of Pitts
burgh. celebrated her eightieth birth
day April 2nd. Mrs Cohen originated
the Isaac M. Wise Sisterhood Memorial
Fund Committee in 1927, and her
husband, Judge Cohen, aided Dr. Wise
in founding the Hebrew Union Col
lege.
MR. CHAS. P. KRAMER acted as
chairman at a meeting in New York
when representatives of eighteen con
gregations discussed a campaign to
arouse interest in the Reform Move
ment and to bring members into the
Synagogue, the forthcoming campaign
to be under the auspices of the Metro
politan Association of Reform Jewish
Congregations. During the discussion.
Rabbi Irving Reichert urged that the
movement include conservative and
orthodox congregations.
RABBI ABRAM HIRSCHBERG. of
Temple Sholom,Chicago, in his Found
er’s Day address in the Hebrew Union
College Chapel, surveyed the modern
spiritual field and urged his col
leagues to emphasize sentiment in
their pulpit utterances.
THE 110TH ANNIVERSARY of
the birth of Dr. Isaac M. Wise was
celebrated March 30th. Among Dr.
Wise’s many achievements were tin*
organization of Reform Judaism in
America, founding of the Hebrew
Union College and establishment of
the Israelite, which later became the
American Israelite.
HOG'S LEVY, a Jewish lay-leader
of Brooklyn, N. Y., spoke before the
National Federation of Brotherhood’s
convention in Washington on “Good
Will in All Jewry and Between Jew
and Gentile.” Mr. Levy stressed the
need for a movement for restoration
of good will and better understanding
among all citizens of this nation, and
urged that Reform and Orthodox
Jews exchange the courtesies of at
tending Brotherhood and other meet
ings.
THE LATE MYRON T. HERRICK.
United State's Ambassador to France,
subsidized a Yiddish theater in Cleve
land in 191.0, it has been revealed, as
a consent to a proposal of his Jewish
friend, the late Harry Bernstein, who
was prominent in political circles in
Cleveland. The enterprise did not
meet with success, but the actors and
other employees received their full
remuneration, the money being fur
nished secretly by Mr. Herrick.
RUDOLh SAMOILOV ITCH, captain
ot the ice breaker Krassin which made
the spectacular rescue of a part of the
crew of the airship Italia wrecked in
the North Pole zone, was honored in
Beilin by the Society of German
Scientists in recognition of his work.
Sumoilovitch was awarded the Meteor
Medal, and it is stated that this is the
first time a foreigner has been given
this medal.
COL. FREDERICK H. KISCH,
chairman of the Palestine Zionist Ex
ecutive, who spent two months in the
United States in the interest of the
United Palestine Appeal, has returned
to Palestine to resume his adminstra-
-tive duties.
