MISS ELIZABETH SIMON, the

Galveston, has decided to withdraw
from the contest. Miss Simon said
that she was motivated in withdraw
ing not only because of the letter she
received from a Galveston Bishop sug
gesting that the contest was an “un-
aesthetic spectacle,” but she has be
come tired of the demonstrations and
the anti-Semitic outbursts to which
she has been subjected since being
chosen “Miss Europe” at the Paris
contest. She also dislikes personal
advertisement.
JEWS CANNOT BE BARRED FROM
JURY LISTS, GEORGIA SUPREME
COURT RULES
Reverses Decision of County Court,
" hich Refused to Intervene; Brands
Commissioners’ Action as Malicious
and Prejudicial
Atlanta, Ga. (JTO)—The Supreme
Court of the State of Georgia took a
vigorous stand in checking an attempt
t<> infringe upon the citizenship rights
of citizens of the Jewish faith in that
>tate, in handing down a decision re
versing the position taken by the Su
perior Court of Bryan County. In
handing down its ruling, the Supreme
( ourt took occasion to denounce the
Bryan County Jury Commissioners for
excluding Jews from the jury panels.
The Supreme Court upheld the ac
tion of C. J. Bashlor and others who
sought a mandamus against a resolu
tion adopted by the Bryan County
Jury Commissioners, excluding Jews
from both petit and grand jury ser
vice. The complainants charged that
the Commissioners acted with “hatred,
malice, and religious prejudice.”
The Commissioners’ resolution af
fected only four Jews constituting the
Jewish community in the countv. The
four Jews, headed by Mr. Bashlor, in-
'tituted a suit to gain the rights of
’•'Ual citizenship, when the resolu-
" n became known. They lost the
j ;t in the county superior court,
which refused to force the Commis
sioners to revise their jury lists.
The Supreme Court reversed the
"Her court’s stand and critisized the
. lr - v Commissioners. In the Supreme
' "urt decision, it was pointed out that
a t ‘ 10U Kh the ruling affected only four
^ ,rS j )ns * n count y. one was the
’ rd largest taxpayer in the county
' ir " t * le others were also “upright,
honest arid eligible.”

DR. ISAAC M. WISE
The 110th anniversary of the birth
of Dr. Isaac M. Wise, leader of Re
form Judaism, was observed Satur
day, March 30th, at 3 p. m., at Found
er’s Day exercises in Hebrew Union
College Chapel, at Cincinnati. This
picture was taken by the late Isaac
Benjamin, internationally famous
photographer, and was found during
a search of his files for another pic
ture. The cane seen here is of olive
wood and was brought from Jerusalem
by one of his admirers to Dr. Wise,
who traveled in the Holy Land when
such journeys were infrequent.
A HAPPY UNION
What are human beings striving
for? Liberty, Freedom. But aren’t we
free? It all depends upon what we
call Freedom. Haven’t we all the Lib
erty we want? There is ample evi
dence that mankind is not at all as
free as it might be, that humans do
not enjoy that Liberty to which they
have a right. And this lack of com
plete liberty, this want of Freedom,
and this yearning of men and women
from liberation of the thraldom which
is still theirs, gives point to Passover,
the Ancient Jewish Festival of Lib
eration. Thousands of years have
elapsed since the Children of Israel
marched out of Egypt a free people.
It was a new thought this emancipa
tion of slaves and for all the succeed
ing centuries and centuries. The Jew
ish people, the world over, have held
aloft the Torch of Freedom, have
kindled from age to age the Blazing
Fires of Liberty.
And when the Children of Israel
marched out of Egypt they baked their
own unleavened bread, Matzoth they
called it. It was customary for every
Jew to bake his own Matzoth. But
there came a time when that was im
possible. A complex civilization, the
many demands that constantly made
upon the time and energies of man
called for specialization and so there
came into being the Matzoth Bak
eries, the most outstanding of which
is the B. Manischewitz Company, of
Cincinnati, Ohio, founded in 1888.
Pesach is a unique holiday. To ob
serve this holiday properly, it is es
sential to have the Unique Matzoth,
the Manischewitz Matzoth and Mat
zoth Products. There are none like
them. The moral is obvious Pesach,
unique. No other feast in the Jewish
Calendar is like it. Manischewitz
Matzoth is unique, there is no other
Matzoth like it.
